Penguins Fall to Green Bay, 84-83

Youngstown, Ohio – DJ Burns scored a season-high 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team fell to Green Bay, 84-83, on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center.

Green Bay's Foster Wonders hit a 3-pointer with just two seconds remaining in the game to lift the Phoenix, who improve to 17-9 overall and 12-3 in the Horizon League, to the one-point victory.

Burns, who connected on 11-for-20 with a career-high five 3-pointers, buried his fifth 3-pointer to give the Penguins (18-8, 10-5 Horizon League) an 82-79 lead with just 30 seconds left.

Will Eames' layup with 15 seconds left cut the Penguins lead to one, 82-81, before Burns split a pair of free throws to put YSU up two with 13 seconds left.

Green Bay's David Douglas' jumper in the paint was blocked out of bounds by Brandon Rush. Wonders came off a screen and drilled the game-winner from the top of the key.

Brett Thompson scored 23 points with four steals and four assists while EJ Farmer scored 11 points off the bench and Ziggy Reid added 10 points.

Youngstown State built an eight-point second half lead, 58-50, and led by six 64-58, with just under 12 minutes remaining. However, the Penguins went scoreless for nearly seven minutes, and Green Bay clawed its way to a 70-64 edge at the 5:51 mark.

Thompson banked in a jumper and Farmer drilled a 3-pointer to get the Penguins within one and Rush split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 77-77 with 2:23 left.

The teams traded baskets before Burns' go-ahead 3-pointer.

The Penguins jumped out in front early scoring the first seven points of the game and forcing a Green Bay timeout.

A 3-pointer and two free throws by Thompson put the Penguins up 12-5 before the Phoenix went on an 21-4 run to take a 10-point lead, 26-16 with 9:42 left in the first half.

A three-point plays by Burns and Farmer, and a basket and two free throws by Reid vaulted the Penguins back into a tie at 26-26.

Green Bay recaptured a five-point lead late in the first half, but 3-pointers by Burn and Farmer and another by Burns ignited another 10-0 YSU run that gave the Penguins a 36-31 lead. The Penguins carried a 42-38 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

Youngstown State closes out its three-game homestand against Robert Morris, Wednesday, Feb. 14. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
