Youngstown, Ohio – Five players scored in double figures and a pair of milestones were reached as Youngstown State used a total team effort to knock off Toledo, 93-87, on Saturday afternoon at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
Youngstown State extended its win streak to four games and improved to 6-5 while Toledo falls to 6-4.
Senior EJ Farmer scored a team-high 20 points while Nico Galette posted a double-double with 17 points and 11rebounds, and he dished out seven assists. Juwan Maxey poured in 16 points and Jason Nelson scored 13 points with five rebounds. Gabe Dynes scored 12 points with six rebounds and collected a career-high nine blocks.
Galette reached 1,500 career points and Dynes collected his 100th career block. Dynes' nine blocks are the third most in a single game, and he is just the second player in school history to record at least nine blocks in a game.
The Penguins shot 49.2 percent from the field and made 12 3-pointers. Five different players connected from beyond the arc and four made at least two 3s.
Youngstown State posted 11 team blocks, which is the third-highest single-game team total in program history.
The Penguins led for 18:21 in the first half, owns a 44-39 halftime advantage, and built a 12-point lead, 56-44, less than four minutes into the second half.
Toledo fought back with an 18-6 run, which included a 13-0 spurt, to take its first lead, 62-60, since opening minutes of the game.
The teams batted through a couple ties and a few lead changes before the Penguins recouped a six-point lead, 76-70, keyed by 3-pointers by Maxey and Galette, three charity tosses by Maxey, a 3-pointer from Farmer and a put-back dunk by Galette.
Toledo tied the game at 76-76 at the 4:10 mark, but two more free throws by Maxey, a crucial 3-pointer by Cris Carroll, and a fast-break dunk by Galette boosted the Penguins to an 83-76 lead with 3:14 left.
The Rockets twice cut the lead down to three in the waning minutes, but a free throw by Nelson and an offensive rebound and putback dunk by Dynes extended the lead back to six, 90-84, with just 29 seconds remaining.
Youngstown State returns to Horizon League play when it visits Wright State, Wednesday, Dec. 18. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. Â
