Doseck Wins Individual Title, Penguins Post Top Traditional Round in New Jersey

Howell, N.J. — Senior Madison Doseck won her first career individual title, and Youngstown State's bowling team had the highest pinfall in the field on Saturday at the Garden State Classic.

Doseck fired a five-game set of 1,133, and she finished off her championship round with a 245 in her fifth game. She topped the individual standings by 48 pins to earn Most Valuable Player accolades at a tournament for the first time in her career.

Doseck had plenty of help on Saturday as the Penguins won all five of their head-to-head matches and secured a top-four seed in Sunday's championship bracket. Youngstown State shot 5,225 collectively, which was the highest pinfall in traditional play. YSU had 178 more pins than fourth-place Vanderbilt in qualifying, and the Penguins were 431 pins ahead of fifth-place Maryville.

While Doseck took the top spot individually with five games ranging between 202 and 245, Madyson Marx and Kirsten Moore both placed in the top eight. Marx fired a 256 in her first game and went on to record a 1,070 set for seventh place, and Moore's round of 1,069 was highlighted by a 267 game. Lyndsay Ennis finished 19th with a 1,017 series.

All five Penguins shot at least 207 in their opening match, and Doseck and Marx posted scores of 237 and 256 in the fourth and fifth spots in the lineup in a 1,135-927 win over Coppin State. YSU then beat No. 23 Delaware State 1,033-975 and No. 10 Duquesne 954-938, and Moore's 267 came in a 1,054-919 victory over Monmouth. Doseck struck nine times, including on her last six attempts to help the Penguins beat 12th-ranked Mount St. Mary's 1,049-1,008 to punctuate the unbeaten round.

Youngstown State will open bracket play on Sunday at 8:25 a.m. against Vanderbilt. The Penguins will have to go 3-0 to win the team title at the tournament.
