The Youngstown State men's golf team wrapped up its fall season with a third-place finish at the three-day Bucknell Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday from Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Penguins concluded the tournament with a three-round team total of 861 to finish six strokes behind St. John's, which took home the team title at 15 over par with an 855. Colgate finished as the runner up with an 859 while Bucknell placed fourth an 862. YSU's three-round 861 is tied for the ninth-lowest 54-hole performance in program history.
YSU recorded a season-low team round of 282 in the opening round on Sunday before posting a 291 in the second round on Monday to sit tied atop the leaderboard heading into the final session on Tuesday. The Guins finished the event with a 288 in Tuesday's third round. Youngstown State collected its second consecutive top-three finish after winning the team title at the Red Flash Invitational hosted by Saint Francis on Oct. 7-8.
Michael Porter tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard with a career-best three-round score of 213 (73-71-69) to come in as YSU's top individual finisher. The redshirt sophomore's season-low, one-under-par 69 in the final round on Tuesday featured 11 pars and four birdies as he fired a three-under-par 33 on the front nine.
Jake Ryan (69-75-73) and Ryan Sam (71-75-71) each tied for 22nd with a three-round total of 217. Ryan's career-low, one-under-par 69 in the first round included 12 pars, two birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 9 as he shot a three-under-par 33 on the front nine. Sam's opening-round 71 on Sunday featured 11 pars and three birdies as he turned in a two-under-par 34 on the front nine.
Playing as an individual, Nolan Shilling also finished tied for 22nd with a career-best three-round 217 (68-75-74). The redshirt freshman's career-low, two-under-par 68 in the first round included 10 pars and five birdies as he fired a two-under-par 34 on the front nine.
Jordan Kish concluded the tournament with a three-round score of 224 (72-77-75). The freshman's first-round 72 featured nine pars, two birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 3.
Jacob Sylak, who was tied for fifth individually heading into the final round, was forced to withdraw on Tuesday due to injury. The senior posted a pair of even-par 70's over the first two rounds of action. Sylak's opening-round 70 included 12 pars and three birdies while his second-round 70 featured 11 pars and four birdies.
Devin Smith of Mount St. Mary's claimed medalist honors by one shot at three under par with a three-round total of 207 (73-67-67).
Youngstown State will now pause from competition until the spring portion of the 2024-25 season begins. YSU's complete spring schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
