Hinckley, Ohio – The Youngstown State men's golf team matched the program's lowest 36-hole performance while earning a season-best fifth-place finish at Cleveland State's Tom Tontimonia Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday from Pine Hills Golf Club.
The Penguins finished the two-day event at 11 over par with a two-round team total of 571 to match the school record for lowest 36-hole performance. YSU also recorded a 571 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational during the 2018-19 season. Youngstown State posted a 287 in the opening round on Monday before closing the tournament with a season-best 284 in the second and final session on Tuesday. The event was shortened to 36 holes due to heavy rainfall and wet course conditions.
Jake Ryan tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard with a two-round score of 140 (70-70) to collect his first-career top-10 finish. The sophomore's career-low, even-par 70 in the first round featured 14 pars and a pair of birdies while his second-round 70 included 10 pars and four birdies.
Jacob Sylak finished tied for 20th with a two-round total of 142 (73-69). The senior's career-low, one-under-par 69 in the second session featured 11 pars and four birdies as he shot a one-under-par 34 on the front nine. Sylak's first-round 73 included nine pars and three birdies as he shot an even-par 35 on the back nine.
Playing as an individual, Michael Porter also tied for 20th with a two-round 142 (72-70). The sophomore's season-low, even-par 70 in the second round featured 14 pars and a pair of birdies as he carded a one-under-par 34 on the back nine.
Playing as an individual, Josh Weiner finished tied for 35th with a two-round score of 145 (74-71) in his debut collegiate tournament. The redshirt freshman's one-over-par 71 in the second round included 15 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 15 as he shot a bogey-free, even-par 35 on the front nine.
Jordan Kish (71-75) and Ryan Sam (73-73) each finished with a two-round total of 146. Kish's one-over-par 71 in the opening round featured nine pars and four birdies as he shot a two-under-par 33 on the front nine. Sam's first-round 73 included 11 pars and a pair of birdies.
Nolan Shilling concluded the event with a three-round score of 147 (75-72). The redshirt freshman matched his career-low round with a two-over-par 72 in the second session that featured 14 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 5.
Playing as an individual, Ayden Richmond finished with a two-round total of 148 (74-74). The sophomore's career-low 74 in the first round included 12 pars and two birdies while his second-round 74 featured 11 pars and two birdies.
Oakland claimed the tournament title by 11 strokes at seven under par with a two-round team total of 553. Northern Kentucky and IU-Indy each turned in a 564 to tie for second place while Detroit Mercy placed fourth with a 566.
Luke Kelly of Oakland edged out David Swab of Detroit Mercy in a two-hole playoff with a par on the second playoff hole to earn the individual title.
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Oct. 7-8 with the Red Flash Invitational hosted by Saint Francis at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.
