Redshirt senior Dean Austalosh tied for 36th to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to a ninth-place finish in the season-opening Red Bandana Invitational hosted by Boston College, which concluded on Monday at Turning Stone Resort's Kaluhyat Course in Verona, N.Y.
The Penguins finished their first event of the 2023-24 season with a three-round team total of 936. YSU posted team marks of 310 and 316 in the first two rounds, respectively, on Sunday. The Guins recorded another 310 in the third and final round of the event on Monday.
Austalosh finished tied for 36th in the individual standings with a three-round score of 233 (83-74-76) to come in as YSU's top finisher. The senior's two-over-par 74 in the second session on Sunday matched the lowest round by a Penguin at the tournament.
In his first collegiate event, true freshman Jake Ryan finished tied for 41st with a three-round total of 235 (77-77-81). Junior Jacob Sylak finished tied for 50th with a three-round 237 (79-81-77) while sophomore Ryan Sam tied for 54th with a 239 (74-84-81). In his first tournament as a Penguin, senior transfer Justin Atkinson tied for 58th with a three-round score of 240 (80-84-76).
West Virginia claimed the tournament title at eight over par with a three-round team total of 872. Boston College was two strokes back with an 874 to finish as the runner-up while George Mason placed third with an 893. Delaware and Longwood each posted an 896 to tie for fourth and round out the top five.
West Virginia's Max Green earned medalist honors by one stroke at three under par with a three-round score of 213 (68-75-70). Jack Pogorelc of Boston College was the runner-up with a three-round total of 214 (71-70-73).
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Sept. 11-12 with the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
