Box Score Rochester, Mich. — Youngstown State's Josi Borum became the only active Division I player to reach 1,000 career kills, digs and assists, and she helped the Penguins win 3-1 at Oakland on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21.
Borum, a fifth-year senior from Sterling, Ill., who sets from the back row and hits in the front row on the right side for the Penguins, entered the evening with 1,790 assists, 1,036 digs and 991 kills. Her ninth and milestone kill came in the fourth set of Friday night's win at OU Credit Union Arena,
Youngstown State evened its Horizon League record at 1-1 with the victory, and it achieved its second straight win over the Golden Grizzlies after Oakland had won 20 straight decisions between the schools.
In addition to Borum's balanced night, Abbie Householder registered a double-double with a team-high 13 kills and 12 digs. Jazmin Vergara finished with 12 kills and nine digs, and Isidora Sisic had a match-best 18 digs and four aces.
Youngstown State's final deficit in the opening set was 2-1, and a 5-1 burst midway through allowed it to gain a 19-15 cushion. Borum finished off the victory with a kill, her third of the night, on set point. The Penguins then opened up a 12-6 lead in the second set following consecutive kills by Vergara and Householder, and their advantage was at least three the rest of the set.
Oakland held the upper hand for most of the third set, and Youngstown State's first lead was 14-13 after an Isabel Schaefbauer ace. The only other YSU advantage came at 15-14 as Oakland was able to extend the match. Youngstown State, though, set the tone early in the fourth by scoring the first seven points of the set. Borum's 1,000th career kill gave YSU a 22-17 lead, and the Penguins went on to win 25-21.
Youngstown State will try to sweep its Horizon League road trip, facing a quick turnaround at Cleveland State on Saturday. The Penguins and Vikings will play at 4 p.m. at Woodling Gymnasium.
