Pittsburgh, Pa. – Sophomore Chloe Weiland scored with just 37 seconds left to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Duquesne on Thursday evening.
The Penguins improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2012 while the Dukes fall to 1-2 on the year.
With the game in its final minute, the Penguins defense cleared a ball up the left side. Taylor Berry corralled the ball just past midfield and centered to Weiland streaking down the middle of the field.
Weiland split a pair of defenders, raced to the penalty box, fought off a Duquesne defender and laced a left-footer off the Dukes' goalkeeper and into the lower right of the goal.
Just moments before Weiland's game-winner, senior goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick made her sixth and final save of the game, a full-extended diving save at the lower-right corner.
Duquesne got on the board quickly scoring in the sixth minute of the game.
The Penguins were able to build some momentum offensively late in the first half and tied the game.
Lianna Van Sice's shot on goal was deflected out of bounds setting up the Penguins' first corner kick of the game. Van Sice centered to the middle and Berry's header tied the game at 1-1 at the 36:01 mark.
With the win, Kirkpatrick tied the YSU all-time wins record at 14 and is one shy of breaking the record.
Youngstown State hosts Canisius, Sunday, Aug, 27. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
