Youngstown, Ohio – Junior Maddie Keister scored her first career goal and Brooklynn Kirkpatrick notched her first shutout of the season as the Youngstown State women's soccer team defeated Akron, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins improve to 2-0 for the time since 2015 while the Zips fall to 1-1. Youngstown State also defeated the Zips for the first time in program history.
Keister launched a free kick on the left side from 35-yards out over the Akron goalkeepers outstretched arms and into the upper-right corner at the 5:43 mark of the game.
Regan LaVigna led the Penguins with three total shots and two shots on goal while Keister and Chloe Weiland also tallied shots.
Kirkpatrick notched four saves in her 13th career win and her 11th career shutout.
Youngstown State visits Duquesne, Thursday, Aug 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
