
YSU Baseball Signee Derrick Tarpley Jr. Drafted by Oakland Athletics

Incoming Youngstown State baseball student-athlete Derrick Tarpley Jr. was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the 526th overall pick in the 18th round of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.
Tarpley Jr., a native of Brownsville, Pa., signed a National Letter of Intent to join the YSU baseball program in 2024 last fall. He played for Coach Scott Roebuck at Brownsville Area High School during his prep career. Tarpley Jr. batted .651 and slugged 1.069 with 28 hits, two home runs, three doubles, five triples, 22 runs scored, 13 stolen bases and a .700 on-base percentage as a junior in 2022. He posted 48 hits, 18 doubles, six triples, five home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 stolen bases over 32 games played during the summer of 2022.
Tarpley Jr. was a three-time All-County selection and a three-time All-Section honoree during his high school baseball career. He also played basketball and soccer for the Falcons. Tarpley Jr. played summer/travel ball for the Pittsburgh Hardball Academy under Coach Nelson Cooper, and he played fall ball under Coach Fred Albert.
