The Youngstown State bowling team was voted seventh in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll of the 2022-23 season, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Only 18 ballots were cast in the final poll, which was fewer than half of any poll during the season, and Youngstown State received 440 points. That was 10 behind sixth-ranked North Carolina A&T and 14 behind fifth-ranked Stephen F. Austin.
This is the fourth straight season that Youngstown State has been ranked in the top 10 of the final NTCA poll, and seventh is YSU's second-highest end-of-season ranking. The Penguins were ranked 10th in the final poll of both 2019-20 and 2021-22, and they were fifth in 2020-21. Youngstown State is one of seven programs to rank in the top 10 in each of the last four final polls.
YSU set school records with 83 wins and a .659 winning percentage in 2022-23. The Penguins placed fourth at the Southland Bowling League Championship and finished as the runners-up at the NCAA Lansing Regional. Statistically, the 2022-23 squad set program bests for Baker frame average, spare percentage, single pin spare percentage and fill frame percentage.
Vanderbilt was the top-ranked team in the poll with 637 points, and it earned 16 of a possible 18 first-place votes after winning the National Championship. The Southland was well-represented with Vanderbilt, Arkansas (#2), Stephen F. Austin (#5), YSU (#7), Sam Houston (#9) and Louisiana Tech (#10) all in the top 10.
