Cleveland, Ohio – The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Cleveland State on Thursday night at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
The Penguins drop to 9-9 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon League while Cleveland State improves to 16-6 and 4-0.
YSU won three singles matches in the tighly-contested match against the Vikings.
The Penguins dropped a tough doubles point as the Vikings won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the lead in the match.
At No. 3, Harry Fouzas and Laurentiu Mandocescu picked up a 6-4 win to even things up after CSU won 6-2 at No. 2. It was a back-and-forth contest at No. 1 doubles that went to a tiebreaker. The Guins had a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker, but the Vikings won the final three points to win the match.
In singles play, David Alvarez Moreno, Javi Gonzalez Pla and Clement Mainguy earned victories. At No. 6 singles, Moreno won by a score of 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5 singles, Pla won a 6-4, 6-1 decision. Mainguy claimed a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 victory at No. 3 singles.
Cleveland State won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 in the victory.
The Penguins return to action tomorrow against Chicago State at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. First serve for the match is scheduled for 3 p.m. following the women's match against the Cougars. YSU beat Chicago State by a 4-3 margin on Sunday in Homewood, Ill.
