Game Preview
- The Youngstown State baseball team (6-20, 3-5 Horizon League) will continue its seven-game homestand at Eastwood Field on Tuesday when it hosts Pitt (12-13, 4-6 ACC) in a non-conference contest at 5 p.m.

- Freshman left-hander Braden Gebhardt will take the mound to make his 13th appearance and second start of the season. The Howland, Ohio, native has a 5.76 ERA, one save and 26 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched so far in 2023.
- Youngstown State won one of three games against Purdue Fort Wayne in Horizon League action this past weekend at Eastwood Field. The Penguins won a wild 15-14 affair on Saturday on a walk-off single by Matt Thompson in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- In Saturday's win, Steven D'Eusanio went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and tied the single-game school record with three doubles. He became just the second Penguin since 2010 to double three times in a game. The Willoughby, Ohio, native is the first Penguin to double three times in a game since Blaze Glenn on March 21, 2021.
- The Penguins won their 2023 home and Horizon League opener with an 18-3 victory over Oakland at Eastwood Field on March 16. YSU set new season highs with 18 runs and 21 hits while winning its league opener for the third straight season. The Guins recorded at least 18 runs and 21 hits for the first time since posting 22 runs and 21 hits in a 22-6 victory over St. Bonaventure on March 21, 2021. YSU has won its Horizon League opener in three straight seasons for the first time in program history.
- The Penguins split a four-game series at Baylor on March 3-5. YSU's 7-5 victory on March 3 marked its first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013. The Penguins now have four wins over Power Five opponents in the last two seasons and eight during Dan Bertolini's tenure as head coach.
- Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Feb. 28 after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis on Feb. 24-26. In addition, senior right-hander Travis Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after leading YSU to a 6-2 victory in the series opener at Memphis on Feb. 24. Perry allowed one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings.
- As a team, the Penguins rank second in the Horizon League with a .269 batting average, 240 hits and 56 doubles while ranking third with 146 runs scored, 138 RBIs, 358 total bases and a .401 slugging percentage.
- Senior right-hander Travis Perry ranks second in the Horizon League with 38 innings pitched and a .229 opponent batting average while ranking third with 38 strikeouts. He also ranks fifth in the league with three victories and seventh with a 4.26 ERA. Junior right-hander Nick Perez ranks ninth in the league with 29 strikeouts and 10th with 29 innings pitched.
- Junior shortstop Trey Law leads the Horizon League with 38 hits while ranking fifth with a .349 batting average, seventh with 21 runs scored, eighth with seven doubles and ninth with a .432 on-base percentage. The Camp Hill, Pa., native has hit safely in 20 of his last 23 games.
- Senior first baseman Steven D'Eusanio leads the Horizon League and ranks sixth nationally with 14 doubles. He also ranks fourth in the league with 32 hits and eighth with 19 RBIs. D'Eusanio has hit safely in 12 straight games entering Tuesday's contest.
- Senior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy ranks fourth in the Horizon League with 32 hits while ranking seventh with four home runs and 21 runs scored. Senior designated hitter Padraig O'Shaughnessy ranks fourth in the league with eight doubles and 19 walks while ranking sixth with 23 RBIs and seventh with four home runs.
- Senior outfielder Turner Grau is tied for the league lead with three triples while ranking fifth with 17 walks and a team-high nine stolen bases. Senior outfielder Andre Good ranks fourth in the league with eight doubles.
- Freshman right-hander Brandin Anderson leads the Horizon League and ranks 37th nationally with 14 pitching appearances, 13 of which have come out of the bullpen.

Senior catcher Jack Anderson is batting .305 and slugging .463 with 29 hits including four home runs and 20 RBIs. Junior outfielder CJ Funk is batting .261 and slugging .630 with a team-high nine home runs and 26 RBIs.
- Junior right-hander Holden Phelps will start for Pitt against YSU on Tuesday. He has an 0-1 record, a 4.74 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched over six appearances and four starts. Senior right-hander Nash Bryan has a 4-2 record, a 3.72 ERA, two saves and 24 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched over a team-high 13 relief appearances.
- Pitt posted a 29-27 overall record and a 13-16 mark in ACC play during the 2022 season. The Panthers were picked seventh out of seven teams in the Coastal Division in the 2023 ACC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll.

Recapping Purdue Fort Wayne
vs. Purdue Fort Wayne – Friday, March 31 // L 9-12
- Purdue Fort Wayne hit four home runs and scored nine times with two outs to beat the Youngstown State baseball team 12-9 on Friday evening at Eastwood Field.
- Cleanup batter Ben Higgins hit three of those home runs for the Mastodons, and Grant Thoroman hit a crucial three-run blast with two outs in the seventh inning after YSU had cut the deficit to 8-7.
- While the Mastodons had 15 hits, YSU also had a solid night offensively with 12 hits, six of which went for extra bases. Eight different Penguins had hits, and Trey Law, Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Turner Grau and Andre Good each had two hits. O'Shaughnessy hit his fourth homer of the season and also doubled.
- YSU starter Travis Perry pitched five innings and allowed seven runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits. He threw 91 pitches and struck out five batters while dropping to 3-2 this season. Braeden Gebhardt came out of the bullpen and nearly matched Perry in pitch count with 89, and he surrendered five runs on six hits in his 3.2 innings of work. Four of those were earned, and the freshman left-hander struck out three hitters.
vs. Purdue Fort Wayne – Saturday, April 1 // W 15-14
- Matt Thompson hit a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Youngstown State baseball team survived for a 15-14 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on a windy and cold Saturday at Eastwood Field.
- The Penguins trailed 4-2 after three innings, but Cam Marshalwitz was strong out of the bullpen and held the Mastodons scoreless until the eighth. That allowed YSU's offense to heat up, and the Penguins took a 14-4 lead through seven innings.
- The Mastodons scored five runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to tie the game at 14-14. That all went by the wayside as Thompson, a freshman infielder from Wadsworth, Ohio, singled home Braeden O'Shaughnessy from second base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Penguins the win in just under four hours.
- Steven D'Eusanio reached base six times to lead the Penguins offensively, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, a walk and four RBIs. The Willoughby, Ohio, native tied the single-game school record of three doubles. He is the first Penguin to double three times in a game since Blaze Glenn had three doubles against St. Bonaventure on March 21, 2021. He also reached on an error in the bottom of the ninth that gave YSU an extra out and led to the game-winning hit by Thompson.
- Seven different YSU batters had hits, and Trey Law also provided firepower by going 3-for-6 with three RBIs from the leadoff spot in the lineup. RJ Sherwood hit a pair of doubles, drove in three runs and scored twice.
vs. Purdue Fort Wayne – Sunday, April 2 // L 3-9
- Purdue Fort Wayne scored nine runs over the final two innings to overcome a 3-0 deficit and beat the Youngstown State baseball team 9-3 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
- The Penguins led 3-0 after seven innings as their starter Aidan English cruised on the mound, but the Mastodons exploded for eight runs on five hits and one error in the eighth to pull away for the series win. Purdue Fort Wayne added an insurance run in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
- English allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over a career-high seven innings in a no-decision. The freshman right-hander from North Lima, Ohio, did not allow a run over his first six innings on the mound as he retired the side in order in three different frames. English retired eight straight batters between the second and fifth innings, and he handed the ball to the bullpen with a 3-0 lead.
- Offensively for YSU, Matt Thompson hit the first home run of his career, Turner Grau recorded an RBI single and scored a run and Steven D'Eusanio had an RBI double.

Youngstown State will continue its homestand at Eastwood Field on Thursday when it begins a three-game Horizon League series against Northern Kentucky at 5 p.m. The Penguins and Norse will proceed to play on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
