Guins Earn Hard-Fought 5-2 Victory Over CSU On Senior Day

The Youngstown State men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-2 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.

With the win, YSU concludes the regular season with a 12-10 overall mark while posting a 6-2 HL ledger. CSU falls to 19-7 and finishes 7-1 in league play.

The Penguins won the doubles point before winning four singles matches in three sets to oust the Vikings.

At doubles, the Guins earnd the point with impressive victories at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, Will Everett and David Alvarez Moreno won 6-3 while Laurentiu Mandocescu and Harry Fouzas claimed a 6-2 win at No. 3.

The singles matches featured plenty of top quality back-and-forth tennis by both teams as only one match was completed in straight sets. YSU dropped the first set in each match before battling back for four victories.

At No. 2 singles, Clement Mainguy claimed a 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory rebounding for the win after dropping his first set. At No. 3 singles, Nathan Favier dropped his first set 7-6, before bouncing back for 6-4, 6-4 set victories. Fouzas claimed a three-set victory at No. 4 singles with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 come-from-behind victory. At No. 5 singles, Javi Gonzlez Pla won a 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 decision in the final match. In the second set, Pla fought off three match points during the tiebreaker to take the victory.

YSU opens play at the Horizon League Championships on Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
