The Youngstown State baseball team battled but came up short in both games of a Horizon League doubleheader at Wright State on Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
The Penguins lost 4-3 on a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning in game one before dropping game two 10-6. In the nightcap, YSU pulled within a run after falling behind 7-0, but the Raiders scored three times over their final two at bats to complete the series sweep.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy collected three hits including a home run and four RBIs on the day to lead the offensive charge for the Penguins. Freshman left-hander Cam Marshalwitz gave YSU a tremendous outing in game one as he allowed one run and scattered four hits over a career-high 5.1 innings in his third career start.
Youngstown State falls to 7-28 overall and 3-11 in Horizon League play while Wright State improves to 20-16 overall and 10-5 in league action.
Game 1 Recap
Wright State scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit and defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 4-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Raiders scored once in the third to take the lead before the Penguins struck for a pair of runs in the fourth. YSU pushed its lead to 3-1 with a single run in the eighth before Wright State plated three runs in the ninth to earn the walk-off victory.
YSU starter Cam Marshalwitz turned in the best outing of his young career as he allowed just one run on four hits over a career-high 5.1 innings in a no-decision. The true freshman left-hander from Gibsonia, Pa., retired the side in order in the second in just his third career start.
In the bottom of the ninth, Patrick Fultz hit a leadoff double before back-to-back walks loaded the bases with nobody out. Pinch hitter Gehrig Anglin hit into a 5-2-3 double play to put runners at second and third with two away. Kenny Misik came on in relief of Patrick Gumto and hit Julian Greenwell to load the bases again. After Casey Marshalwitz entered for the Penguins, the Raiders scored a run on a wild pitch and Andrew Patrick was intentionally walked to load the bases. Boston Smith then delivered a two-run walk-off double to left field to give Wright State the comeback win.
Misik suffered the loss for the Penguins after being responsible for the winning run. Gumto was charged with two runs on one hit and three walks over a season-high 3.1 innings of relief.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI single while Turner Grau doubled and scored a run. Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Eli Brown each singled and scored a run while Matt Thompson singled and drove in a run. Each team finished the contest with six hits.
The Raiders jumped in front 1-0 with a single run in the bottom of the third inning. Avery Fisher reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI double by Greenwell.
The Penguins took a 2-1 lead with two runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning. Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a leadoff single and Grau followed with a double to set up an RBI groundout by Steven D'Eusanio. After Grau stole third base, Padraig O'Shaughnesy delivered an RBI single to right center that put YSU in front.
Youngstown State added to its lead with a single run on two hits in the top of the eighth inning. Brown reached with a one-out single, D'Eusanio walked and Padraig O'Shaughnessy singled to load the bases. Thompson followed with an RBI groundout to second base that plated Brown to give YSU a 3-1 advantage.
Wright State starter Jake Shirk allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision. Alex Theis earned the victory after allowing one run on two hits and three walks over three innings of relief.
Greenwell went 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI to pace the Raiders offensively.
Game 2 Recap

The Raiders struck for five runs in the first inning and two in the second to build a 7-0 edge. The Penguins chipped away by scoring once in fourth, four times in the fifth and once in the sixth to shave Wright State's lead to 7-6. The Raiders plated two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull away for the series sweep.
Ian Francis went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a run scored while Padraig O'Shaughnessy was 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs. Trey Law went 2-for-5 with an RBI single while Brown had a pair of singles and scored a run.
YSU starter Aidan English took the loss after allowing two runs on two walks in one third of an inning. Brandin Anderson was responsible for five runs, four of them earned, on three hits and six walks over 2.2 innings. Zach Stayduhar permitted two runs on four hits over a career-high four innings of relief. Casey Marshalwitz was charged with an unearned run in one inning of work.
The Raiders scored five runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take the lead. Greenwell drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a wild pitch before Fultz and Luke Arnold drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks. Dane Thomas added a two-run single to put Wright State ahead 5-0.
The Raiders increased their lead to 7-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Patrick drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Smith. Jay Luikart hit a two-out double and scored on a throwing error after stealing third.
The Penguins got on the board in the top of the fourth when Padraig O'Shaughnessy hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
YSU cut Wright State's lead to 7-5 with four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. RJ Sherwood was hit by a pitch and Francis and Brown followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. After Sherwood scored on a passed ball, Law delivered an RBI single to center field. Braeden O'Shaughnessy then greeted Wright State reliever Josh Laisure with an RBI single to left center and his brother Padraig O'Shaughnessy drove home Law with a sacrifice fly.
The Penguins pulled within 7-6 with a single run in the top of the sixth inning. Sherwood hit a one-out double to right center and Francis followed with an RBI single through the left side.
The Raiders were able to push their lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh when Arnold hit a one-out single and Fisher followed with a two-out, two-run home run. Wright State tacked on a single run in the bottom of the eighth to produce the final margin.
Wright State starter Luke Stofel allowed five runs on six hits while fanning five batters over 4.1 innings. Laisure was responsible for one run on three hits in one inning of work. Tristan Haught was awarded the victory after allowing one hit and striking out five over 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Luikart came on to retire the side in order in the top of the ninth inning.
The Penguins will continue their seven-game road swing on Tuesday with a non-conference contest at Penn State at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com and B1G+.
