The Youngstown State men's golf team will continue its spring schedule on Sunday when it begins play in the Wright State Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro, Ohio.
The Penguins are coming off an eighth-place finish in NKU's The Jewell on Tuesday. Fifth-year senior Bryan Kordupel finished tied for ninth with a three-round score of 214 (76-64-74) to earn his fifth top-10 finish of the season. Kordupel's performance was highlighted by a spectacular career-low, seven-under-par 64 in the second round on Monday. The round, which featured 11 pars and seven birdies, tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in YSU history.
Only Ross Beal's round of 63 on Oct. 9, 2007 at the IPFW Fall Classic was lower than Kordupel's second round at NKU's The Jewell. Kordupel joins D.J. Holub (Sept. 16, 2013) and Kevin Scherr (Sept. 9, 2019) as the only other Penguins to shoot below 65 in a round. He is the only YSU golfer to card such a round in a spring tournament. The Boardman, Ohio, native is averaging a team and career-best 72.7 strokes per round heading into play on Sunday. He has been YSU's top finisher in eight of the team's nine events this season.
The tournament field at the Wright State Invitational will feature 10 other schools including Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Illinois, Green Bay, Murray State, Ohio Dominican, Robert Morris, Southern Indiana, Saint Francis and Wright State. Dayton will also have individuals competing at the event. Each team will have a six-player lineup with the lowest four scores counted each round.
The teams will play 36 holes on Sunday and 18 holes on Monday in the two-day, 54-hole event. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. each day. The course will play approximately 6,754 yards and par is 71. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
Head Coach Tony Joy has announced that YSU's lineup will feature Kordupel, Cade Kreps, Ryan Sam, Dean Austalosh, Cole Christman and Brian Terlesky.
Kordupel, Kreps and Sam have competed in each of the nine events that YSU has played this season. Austalosh will be participating in his eighth tournament of the campaign while Christman will compete for the seventh time. Terlesky will be taking part in his fifth event of the 2022-23 season.
