Youngstown, Ohio – Senior Conchetta Rinaldi's single down the right-field line in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Youngstown State softball team to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Robert Morris in game one of a doubleheader split on Tuesday at the Covelli Sports Complex.
Senior Sara Fessler, who had two hits, led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and went to third on a wild pitch on Bree Kohler's walk.
With runners on second and third, Rinaldi drove in Fessler with the game-winning run with her single to right.
The Penguins, who trailed 5-3, tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Jillian Jakse and Hailey Roach each singled, junior Elyssa Imler knotted the game with a two-out, two-run double to right-center field.
Robert Morris jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring two unearned runs in the top of the second. In the bottom half, Jakse walked to lead off the frame and moved to third after a pair of ground outs. Jakse scored on Avrey Schumacher's single up the middle to cut the lead in half.
Pinch-runner Ashlyn Bishop scored on a Schumacher ground out and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Colonials added three more unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Jakse also had two hits in the opener.
In game two, Fessler initiated a 4-6 triple-play to get out of a no out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning. She then led off the bottom of the half of the first with a solo home run to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials scored two in the second, three in both the third and fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth en route to an 11-3 win.
The Penguins and Colonials close out the series with a single game, Wednesday, April 12. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the Covelli Sports Complex.
