Junior Sophie Howell fired a three-hit shutout and fanned six to lead the Youngstown State softball team to an 8-0 win over St. Bonaventure in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field. The Penguins dropped the second game, 4-2.
The Penguins move to 14-15 overall and while the Bonnies improve to 6-16 overall.
In the opener, Sara Fessler and Megan Turner each had two hits while Jillian Jakse drove in two runs.
The Penguins scored two runs in the first, four in the second and two more in the fifth inning.
Conchetta Rindaldi's run-scoring single in the top of the first scored Fessler and then scored on an SBU error to go up 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, Turner doubled to right-center to score Avrey Schumacher and then scored on a wild pitch.
Jakse's single to left-center field plated Hailey Niederkohr and Fessler to take a 6-0 lead.
Elyssa Imler scored on a wild pitch and Niederkohr's infield single plated Turner to enforce the mercy rule.
In the nightcap, Bree Kohler went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Youngstown State is scheduled to face Oakland in the three-game Horizon League series, March 31-April 1 at the YSU Softball Field.
