Youngstown, Ohio -- Junior Devan Ryan struck out five in a two-hit complete game victory and junior Sara Fessler recorded five hits on the day as the Youngstown State softball team split a doubleheader against Horizon League foe Oakland on Sunday afternoon at the Covelli Sports Complex.
The Penguins dropped the first game, 2-1, and picked up a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.Â
Youngstown State improved to 15-16 overall and 5-2 in league play while Oakland moves to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the Horizon League.
In the 6-1 win, Fessler went 3-for-4 and scored three runs while Conchetta Rinaldi went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Senior Megan Turner had two hits while Jillian Jakse and Avrey Schumacher each drove in a pair of runs.
The Penguins scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run single by Jakse and a bases-loaded walk by Schumacher.Â
After a solo home run by Oakland's Jen Krizka in the top of the top of the fourth, the Penguins scored once in the bottom half of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Rinaldi's run-scoring single in the fourth plated Fessler to regain a three-run lead, and Schumacher's single up the middle scored pinch-runner Sydney Payne in the bottom of the fifth.
Fessler led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Rinaldi.
Ryan retired the final 10 batters she faced.
In the opener, Fessler and Rinaldi each had two hits and junior Sophie Howell struck out four in a hard-luck loss.
The Penguins scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first after Niederkohr scored from second on a throwing error.
Oakland knotted the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Reese Ruhlman in the top of the sixth and plated the go-ahead run on an infield single by Ruhlman in the top of the eighth.
Youngstown State visits Niagara, Tuesday, April 5. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
