Game Preview
- The Youngstown State baseball team (5-17, 2-3 Horizon League) will play a midweek non-conference contest against Toledo (11-11, 5-4 MAC) at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio.

- Freshman right-hander Aidan English will take the ball to make his third start of the season. The North Lima, Ohio, native has logged 11 innings over four appearances and two starts so far in 2023.
- The Penguins will be facing the Rockets for the first time since earning a 5-3 victory at Eastwood Field on April 10, 2019. YSU has won two straight in the series after also winning 17-16 at Toledo on May 8, 2018.
- Youngstown State is coming off a doubleheader split at Milwaukee on Friday. The Penguins took game one 2-1 before falling 9-2 in game two. The series finale was cancelled to heavy snowfall in Wisconsin.
- Fifth-year senior right-hander Travis Perry allowed one unearned run and scattered five hits with six strikeouts over a season-high seven innings to lead YSU to a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee in game one of Friday's doubleheader. The Oil City, Pa, native earned his third victory of the 2023 season.
- The Penguins won their 2023 home and Horizon League opener with an 18-3 victory over Oakland at Eastwood Field on March 16. YSU set new season highs with 18 runs and 21 hits while winning its league opener for the third straight season. The Guins recorded at least 18 runs and 21 hits for the first time since posting 22 runs and 21 hits in a victory over St. Bonaventure on March 21, 2021.
- The Penguins split a four-game series at Baylor on March 3-5. YSU's 7-5 victory on March 3 marked its first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013. The Penguins now have four wins over Power Five opponents in the last two seasons and eight during Dan Bertolini's tenure as head coach.
- Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Feb. 28 after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis on Feb. 24-26. In addition, senior right-hander Travis Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after leading YSU to a 6-2 victory in the series opener at Memphis on Feb. 24. Perry allowed one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings.
- YSU ranks second in the Horizon League with 44 doubles while ranking third with a .266 batting average, 117 runs scored, 199 hits, 110 RBIs, 292 total bases and a .390 slugging percentage.
- Senior right-hander Travis Perry leads the Horizon League with 33 innings pitched and a .195 opponent batting average while ranking second with 33 strikeouts and three victories. He also ranks fifth in the circuit with a 3.55 ERA.
- Junior right-hander Nick Perez ranks ninth in the Horizon League with 26 innings pitched and 10th with 24 strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Brandin Anderson and senior right-hander Casey Marshalwitz each rank second in the league with 11 pitching appearances.
- Junior shortstop Trey Law leads the Horizon League with 32 hits while ranking fifth with a .360 batting average and seven doubles, sixth with a .452 on-base percentage and 12 walks and seventh with 19 runs scored. He has now hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games. Law hit safely in a career-best nine straight games from Feb. 19 to March 5, and he had an eight-game hitting streak snapped in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Milwaukee.
- Senior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy ranks fifth in the Horizon League with 27 hits and 10th with a .325 batting average, three home runs and 17 runs scored. Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy ranks fourth in the league with 23 RBIs, fifth with four home runs and seven doubles and eighth with 11 walks.
- Senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio leads the Horizon League with nine doubles while ranking ninth with 25 hits. D'Eusanio has hit safely in eight straight games entering Tuesday's contest at Toledo. Senior outfielder Andre Good ranks fifth in the league with seven doubles and 10th with three home runs. Senior outfielder Turner Grau ranks second in the league with two triples and fifth with five stolen bases.

Scouting The Rockets
- Toledo is 11-11 overall and 5-4 in Mid-American Conference play after winning two of three games against Akron at Scott Park this past weekend. The Rockets had lost six straight games before earning a 24-8 victory over the Zips on Saturday.
- Junior infielder Jeron Williams is batting .412 and slugging .618 with a team-high 42 hits and 22 RBIs while also leading the Rockets with 17 stolen bases. Sophomore outfielder Garret Pike is batting .337 and slugging .663 with eight home runs and a team-high 31 RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Owen Jackson is batting .289 and slugging .689 with a team-high 10 home runs and 25 RBIs.
- Williams leads the MAC and ranks 10th in the country with 42 hits while ranking eighth in the country with 17 stolen bases. Jackson leads the MAC and ranks 17th nationally with 10 home runs. As a team, Toledo leads the MAC and ranks 25th in the nation with 40 home runs.
- Senior right-hander Cal McAninch has a 3.04 ERA, two saves and 22 strikeouts in 23.2 innings over a team-high 10 appearances. Junior right-hander Kyle Pijaszek has a 2-0 record, a 3.57 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 17.2 innings over nine relief appearances.
- Toledo posted a 33-25 overall record and a 23-16 mark in MAC play during the 2022 season. The Rockets were picked fourth out of 11 teams in the 2023 MAC Baseball Preseason Poll.

Recapping Milwaukee
at Milwaukee – Friday, March 24 (Game 1) // W 2-1
- Travis Perry allowed one unearned run and scattered five hits with six strikeouts over a season-high seven innings to lead Youngstown State to a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wis.
- Perry was masterful once again for the Penguins as he earned his third victory of the season. The fifth-year senior right-hander retired the side in order in the third and sixth innings, and he recorded a strikeout in five different frames. The only run against him scored following a two-out error in the bottom of the fourth. The Oil City, Pa., native only walked two batters as he threw 76 of his 108 pitches for strikes.
- Braden Gebhardt came out of the bullpen and worked two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first career save. The freshman left-hander allowed just one hit and had three strikeouts. The Howland, Ohio, native retired the side in order in the eighth.
- Trey Law matched his career high with four hits by going 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored while Ian Francis and Matt Thompson also had two hits apiece. The Penguins outhit the Panthers 13-6 for the contest and were able to hang on for the victory despite leaving 12 runners on base.
at Milwaukee – Friday, March 24 (Game 2) // L 2-9
- Milwaukee scored seven runs over the first three innings on its way to a 9-2 victory over Youngstown State in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wis.
- The Panthers scored three times in the first and four times in the third to provide plenty of cushion for their starter Luke Hansel, who allowed two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings to earn the victory.
- Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and two walks while D'Eusanio delivered an RBI single. Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Turner Grau, Clay Wiesen, Andre Good and Eli Brown also had base hits for the Penguins.
- YSU starter Nick Perez took the loss after surrendering seven runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings while Kenny Misik was responsible for two runs on two hits over two innings of relief. Patrick Gumto did not allow a run over a season-high 2.1 innings of relief while Brandin Anderson retired the side in order in the eighth.

Youngstown State will return to Eastwood Field on Friday to begin a three-game Horizon League series against Purdue Fort Wayne at 5 p.m. There will be $2 Hot Dog Wally hot dogs and $1 pop at the concession stand for fans.
