Detroit, Mich. -- Senior Megan Turner hit three of Youngstown State's five home runs in the Penguins' doubleheader sweep over Detroit Mercy, 13-1, and 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Buysse Field.
The Penguins, who have won six straight, improve to 13-13 overall and 4-0 in Horizon League play while the Titans fall to 2-17 overall and 1-3 in league action.
In the opener, the Penguins hit four home runs from three different players, and used a five-run fifth and an eight-run sixth to do all of the damage.
It's the first time since 2021 the Penguins hit at least four home runs in a game, and Turner is the first player since 2019 to hit two home runs in the same contest.
Turner, who went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in and two home runs, began the scoring with a solo blast in the top of the fifth for a 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice fly by Conchetta Rinaldi and a run-scoring single by Jillian Jakse pushed the YSU lead to 3-0, senior Hailey Roach drilled a two-run home run to left-center field to give the Penguins a 5-0 lead.
Grace Pilaczynski and Taylor Truran walked and singled, respectively, to lead off the top of the sixth to put runners on first and second. Turner blasted a 1-2 pitch over the right-center field fence to extend the lead to 8-0.
Freshman Kennedy Dean launched a three-run home run to left field to plate Sara Fessler, who walked, and Sydney Payne, who singled, to push the lead to 11-0. The Penguins added two more runs in the top fo the sixth on Detroit throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Elyssa Imler.
Junior Sophie Hoiwell struck out six and allowed just three hits to pick up her sixth win.
In game two, junior Devan Ryan tossed a complete-game four-hitter with four strikeouts to earn her fifth win.
