Penguins Rally For Victory Over Northern Kentucky

The Youngstown State men's tennis team battled back to earn a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.

With the victory, YSU improves to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League while the Norse fall to 9-7 and 1-1.

With the contest tied 3-all, Laurentiu Mandocesu earned the decisive win at No. 1 singles. In his match against Nick Nienhaus, Mandocescu won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second set, 6-4. In the third set, Mandocescu took an early lead at 3-1 and was on top 5-2. He finished out the set with a 6-3 win.

The Penguins had to overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to earn the win.

The Norse won the double points and the first completed singles contest of the match to take a two-point advantage.

In doubles, YSU picked up a victory at No. 2 as Will Everett and David Alvarez Moreno won 6-3. However, the Norse won 6-1 at No. 3 and 6-3 at No. 1 to claim the point in just 30 minutes of play.

In singles, the Norse jumped out to a 2-0 lead following a straight-set win at No. 4. YSU tied the match as Nathan Favier and Harry Fouzas won in straight sets. Favier earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Trevor Bell at No. 3 and Fouzas picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Emilio Bravo at No. 5.

NKU went ahead 3-2 following a straight set win at No. 2 but the Guins tied the contest when Javi Gonzalez Pla won 6-3, 7-6 at No. 6 singles.

The Penguins return to action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to IUPUI. First serve at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
