The Youngstown State men's golf team will return to action on Monday when it begins play in the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational at Highland Golf & Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Penguins are coming off a season-best fourth-place finish at the Carpetbagger Classic hosted by Binghamton on Sunday at Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana, Md. Fifth-year senior Bryan Kordupel finished tied for third with a two-round score of 144 (71-73) to match the best individual finish of his career and earn his third top-five finish of the season.
For his performance, Kordupel was named Horizon League Men's Golfer of the Week on Thursday. He became the first YSU men's golfer to earn weekly league recognition since Brandon Pluchinsky in April of 2016. Kordupel has now been YSU's top finisher in six of the team's seven events so far this season.
The tournament field at the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational will feature 12 other schools including Butler, Ball State, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Evansville, Green Bay, Franklin College, Indiana Hills, University of Indianapolis, IUPUI, Purdue Fort Wayne and Southern Indiana. Illinois, Indiana, Morehead State, Purdue and West Virginia will have individuals competing at the event.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in the two-day, 54-hole event. Play is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. each day. The course will play approximately 6,551 yards and par is 70. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
Head Coach Tony Joy has announced that YSU's lineup will feature Kordupel, Cade Kreps, Ryan Sam, Jacob Sylak and Conner Stevens. In addition, Brian Terlesky will be competing as an individual.
Kordupel, Kreps and Sam have competed in each of YSU's first seven events this season. Stevens, Sylak and Terlesky will each be participating in their fourth event of the campaign.
The tournament is named in honor of the late Don Benbow, who was inducted into the Butler Athletics Hall of Fame for his contributions as a standout football student-athlete, golf and football coach, and his time at Butler as an athletics administrator.
