The first regular-season conference championship in program history, program firsts, several team records, and multiple individual accomplishments highlight the best Youngstown State men's basketball campaign in school history, which concluded last week.
Youngstown State won its first Horizon League championship and earned the first league tournament No. 1 seed in program history after posting a school-record 15-5 league record. By winning the regular-season title, the Penguins earned the conference's automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament for the first time.
The Penguins tied a school record with 24 wins and finished the campaign with an overall record of 24-10.
Team Notes and Accomplishments:
- Won the first regular-season conference championship in program history.
- Set the program's Division I home attendance record with 51,909.
- Tied the program record for most wins in a season with 24.
- Set the school record for conference wins in a season with 15.
- Set the school record for most points in a season with 2,785.
- Set the Division I record of most home wins with 14 and owned a home record of 14-3.
- Set the program record for most field goals made in a season with 1,017.
- Set the single-season record for highest free-throw percentage at .779.
- Earned a berth in the NIT for the first time in program history.
- The Penguins' .487 field-goal percentage set a school Division I record and ranks fourth all-time.
- The 271 made 3-pointers were the second most in program history while the Penguins' 521 assists rank fourth all-time.
Individual Notes and Accomplishments:
- Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun became the first YSU coach to win Horizon League Coach of the Year and was just the second in program history.
- Calhoun was also named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 12 Coach of the Year. He was the first coach in school history to earn that honor.
- Senior Dwayne Cohill was named All-Horizon League First-Team, Horizon League All-Academic Team, College Sports Communicators Academic All-District First-Team, and NABC All-District 12 First-Team.
- Cohill led the Penguins in scoring and assists with 18 points and 4.8 assists per game.
- He became the first player in program history to score at least 600 points with 150 assists with 611 points and 164 assists in 2022-23.
- His 611 points ranked 10th on the YSU single-season list while his 164 assists ranked seventh in program history.
- Graduate student Adrian Nelson was named to the All-Horizon League Third-Team after posting 13.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Nelson had 318 rebounds, which were the most since 1991-92, and ranked second in the league in rebounds per game. Nelson ranked tied for fifth with a .506 field-goal percentage and was tied for 14th in scoring.
- Junior Brandon Rush was named All-Horizon League Third-Team after averaging 13.9 points per game and shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range. He ranked 13th in the league in scoring, tied for fourth with 77 made 3-pointers, and ranked fifth with 2.3 3-pointers made per game.
- His 77 made 3-pointers ranked seventh on the YSU single-season list and are the most since 2017-18.
- Graduate student Malek Green turned in an impressive final campaign averaging 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor. Green ranked second in the league in field-goal percentage, was seventh in rebounding, and tied for 14th in scoring.
- Senior Bryce McBride led the league with a 2.9 assist-to-turnover ratio and ranked fourth with a .880 free-throw percentage, which ranked fourth on the YSU single-season list.
- Freshman John Lovelace, Jr., was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team.
