Late-Inning Covelli Magic Leads Penguins to Sweep Against Morehead State

Youngstown, Ohio – Youngstown State used a pair of sixth-inning rallies to extend its winning streak to four after a doubleheader sweep over Morehead State, 6-2, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field in the Covelli Sport Complex.

The Penguins improve to 11-13 overall while the Eagles fall to 9-11 on the season.

In the opener, junior Sophie Howell struck out nine in a complete-game performance to pick up her fifth win of the season. Junior Hailey Niederkohr and freshman Grace Pilaczynski each had two hits while Jillian Jakse drove in two runs.

The Penguins scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie en route to the 6-2 victory. Conchetta Rinaldi's two-out, bases-loaded walk plated Elyssa Imler with the go-ahead run and Sara Fessler scored on a wild pitch to push the YSU lead to 4-2.

Jakse laced a two-run double to left-center field to score Rinaldi and Hailey Niederkohr.

In the nightcap, sophomore Bree Kohler struck out a season-high eight in five innings pitched and had the go-ahead 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Devan Ryan earned her fourth win with three strikeouts in two innings of scoreless relief.

With the game tied, 1-1,in the bottom of the sixth, the Penguins loaded the bases with no outs after Fessler walked, a Niederkohr bunt single and Rinaldi reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt.

After two force outs at the plate, Kohler ripped a 2-1 pitch up the middle to score Rinaldi and Jakse wth the go-ahead runs.

The Penguins took the lead in the bottom of the second when Hailey Roach stole home on a double steal.

The Eagles tied the game, 1-1, with a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Youngstown State returns to Horizon League action this weekend with a three-game series at Detroit Mercy.
