Senior designated hitter Padraig O'Shaughnessy hit two home runs as the Youngstown State baseball team fell 18-6 to Bowling Green on Wednesday in a midweek matchup at Steller Field in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Penguins held a 6-2 lead before the Falcons struck for four runs in the fourth inning, six in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away for their third straight win in the series. YSU falls to 4-16 overall while Bowling Green improves to 6-12.
O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs to lead the Penguins offensively. The senior's two home runs and five RBIs each set new YSU career highs. He became the first Penguin to homer twice in a game since Dylan Swarmer did so at Northern Kentucky on May 15, 2022. Steven D'Eusanio went 1-for-2 with an RBI single, two walks and two runs scored.
YSU starter Cam Marshalwitz allowed two runs on three hits and four walks over three innings in his first career start. Brandin Anderson was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs on four hits in two thirds of an inning.
The Penguins jumped in front with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Trey Law hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on an error and scored on a two-out RBI single by D'Eusanio. O'Shaughnessy followed with a two-run home run to right center field to give YSU a 3-0 lead.
The Falcons answered with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning to pull within 3-2. Cooper McKenzie drew a bases-loaded walk before Justin Fugitt drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Youngstown State pushed its lead to 6-2 with three runs on one hit in the top of the third inning. Turner Grau and D'Eusanio drew back-to-back one-out walks before O'Shaughnessy belted a three-run blast, his second homer of the game, over the wall in right field.
Bowling Green responded again by scoring four runs on three hits and one error in the home half of the fourth to even the score at 6-6. Mason Montgomery hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a passed ball, Nathan Archer drew a bases loaded walk and two runs scored on an error following a fielder's choice.
The Falcons took their first lead of the contest at 12-6 with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gavin Ganun was hit by a pitch and Montgomery walked to set up a one-out three-run home run from Fugitt. Later in the frame, Archer delivered a two-run double before a two-out solo home run by Nathan Rose.
Bowling Green added four runs in the sixth and two in the eighth to produce the final margin.
Rose went 3-for-6 with a double, a home run and five RBIs to pace the Falcons offensively. BGSU outhit YSU 14-6 for the contest.
Bowling Green starter Luke Krouse allowed six runs, three of them earned, on four hits over three innings in a no-decision. Jacob Turner, DJ Newman and Landon Willeman combined to allow just two hits over six scoreless innings of relief.
