The Youngstown State baseball team (4-15) will play a midweek contest at Bowling Green (4-12) on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Steller Field in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Freshman left-hander Cam Marshalwitz will take the ball to make his first career start on the mound. The Gibsonia, Pa., native has logged 6.2 innings over six appearances out of the bullpen so far this season.
Youngstown State will be facing Bowling Green for the first time since the final game of the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The Penguins fell 2-1 on March 10, 2020, at Eastwood Field in the most recent meeting.
The Penguins have dropped seven of their last eight games after losing two of three Horizon League contests against Oakland at Eastwood Field last week. YSU won its 2023 home and Horizon League opener with an 18-3 victory over the Golden Grizzlies on Thursday before dropping both games of a doubleheader on Friday.
YSU won its Horizon League opener for the third straight season while winning its home opener for the second time in the last three campaigns.
Youngstown State split a four-game series at Baylor on March 3-5. YSU's 7-5 victory over the Bears on March 3 marked its first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013. The Penguins now have four wins over Power Five opponents in the last two seasons and eight during Dan Bertolini's tenure as head coach.
Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Feb. 28 after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis on Feb. 24-26. In addition, senior right-hander Travis Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after leading YSU to a 6-2 victory in the series opener at Memphis on Feb. 24. Perry allowed one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings.
YSU ranks second in the Horizon League with a .268 batting average, 173 hits and 41 doubles. The Penguins also rank third in the league with 107 runs scored, 13 home runs, 100 RBIs, 257 total bases, a .398 slugging percentage and a .352 on-base percentage.
Senior right-hander Travis Perry ranks second in the Horizon League with 27 strikeouts, 26 innings pitched and a .198 opponent batting average. He also ranks fifth in the league with a 4.50 ERA. Junior right-hander Nick Perez ranks fifth in the Horizon League with 23.1 innings pitched and eighth with 21 strikeouts.
Junior infielder Trey Law is tied for the league lead with 27 hits while ranking sixth with a .355 batting average, 16 runs scored and 10 walks. Law also ranks seventh in the league with five doubles and eighth with a .449 on-base percentage.
Senior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy ranks third in the Horizon League with 24 hits, fifth with three home runs, sixth with 16 runs scored, seventh with five doubles and 10th with a .333 batting average.
Senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio leads the Horizon League and ranks 22nd nationally with nine doubles while ranking seventh in the league with 22 hits. Senior outfielder Andre Good ranks fourth in the league with six doubles, fifth with three home runs and seventh with 15 RBIs.
Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy ranks third in the Horizon League with seven doubles and sixth with 15 RBIs. Senior outfielder Turner Grau ranks second in the league with two triples and ninth with 14 RBIs.

Scouting The Falcons

Bowling Green is 4-12 overall and 2-4 in Mid-American Conference play after dropping two of three games at Akron this past weekend. The Falcons earned a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Zips on Sunday to snap a four-game losing skid.
BGSU will play its home opener at Steller Field on Tuesday afternoon against Purdue Fort Wayne before welcoming the Penguins on Wednesday.
Freshman infielder Sam Seidel leads Bowling Green with a .281 batting average, a .375 slugging percentage, a .410 on-base percentage and six stolen bases. Sophomore outfielder Nathan Archer and senior catcher Kyle Gurney each have a team-high 14 hits, and Archer also leads the team with 11 RBIs. The Falcons are batting .188 as a team through their first 16 games of the season.
Sophomore right-hander Connar Penrod has a 3-0 record, a 3.27 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched over five relief appearances. Junior left-hander Rigo Ramos has a 4.30 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 14.2 innings over five appearances and two starts. The Falcons own a team ERA of 6.52 through the first 16 games of the season.
Bowling Green was picked ninth out of 11 teams in the 2023 MAC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll. The Falcons posted an 18-34 overall record and a 14-24 mark in MAC play in 2022.

vs. Oakland – Thursday, March 16 // W 18-3

Braeden O'Shaughnessy slugged a grand slam as part of a three-hit day, and Youngstown State scored 12 runs in the final two innings in an 18-3 victory over Oakland on Thursday at Eastwood Field in the Horizon League opener for both teams.
The Penguins set new season highs with 18 runs and 21 hits as they topped the Golden Grizzlies in their 2023 home opener at Eastwood Field. The high offensive output backed a solid outing by starter Travis Perry, who held the Golden Grizzlies to one run over 6.2 innings before YSU pulled away late.
Eight different Penguins had hits, and six of them had at least three hits. Turner Grau went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-4 while driving in six runs and scoring four times. Trey Law, Steven D'Eusanio, Andre Good and Eddie Saucedo also had three hits apiece.
On the mound, Perry had his longest outing of the season as he limited Oakland to one run on three hits in 6.2 innings while striking out six batters. He allowed three singles, one of which was on a bad hop in the infield, and the lone run against him came in the fourth. He left with a 6-1 lead, and O'Shaughnessy's grand slam gave him plenty of cushion with one swing.

vs. Oakland – Friday, March 17 (Game 1) // L 10-13

Oakland scored 11 runs over the final three innings to pull away for a 13-10 victory over Youngstown State in game one of Friday's Horizon League doubleheader at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins led 3-2 after the sixth inning before the Golden Grizzlies plated three runs in the seventh, two runs in the eighth and six runs in the ninth. YSU scored three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to make things interesting, but Oakland hung on to even the series at a game apiece.
Andre Good went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and three RBIs while Eli Brown was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-5 with a double, Matt Thompson was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, three walks and three runs scored.
YSU starter Nick Perez allowed two runs, one of them earned, on six hits with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. Kenny Misik suffered the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and three walks over two thirds of an inning as one of five Penguin pitchers in the contest.

vs. Oakland – Friday, March 17 (Game 2) // L 2-5

In the nightcap, Oakland's Travis Densmore pitched a gem to lead the Golden Grizzlies to a doubleheader sweep. The senior left-hander came into the game with a 12.06 ERA, but he held the Penguins to two runs on five hits while striking out nine in 7.1 innings. He threw 120 pitches and left with a 5-0 lead with one out in the eighth.
YSU starter Aidan English allowed one earned run and three runs total in five innings of work before handing the ball off to Braden Gebhardt. English allowed six hits and five walks while striking out four. Gebhardt allowed two runs on four hits while striking out a career-high six batters in four innings of relief.
Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Steven D'Eusanio singled and drove in two runs to lead the Penguins offensively.
