Weekend Preview

The Youngstown State baseball team (1-7) will open a four-game series at Baylor (2-6) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas. The Penguins and Bears will proceed to play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. before finishing the series with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Fifth-year senior right-hander Travis Perry will take the mound for the Penguins in the series opener on Friday while junior right-hander Nick Perez is scheduled to start game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Sophomore right-hander Brandon Mikos is slated to start game two on Saturday while the starter for Sunday's series finale is to be announced.
The Penguins will be facing the Bears for the first time in program history.
Youngstown State earned its first victory of the 2023 season when it defeated Memphis 6-2 in series opener on Friday. Senior right-hander Travis Perry earned the victory after allowing one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings. For his efforts, Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the third time in his career on Tuesday.
Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Tuesday after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis this past weekend. He also recorded one double, two RBIs, two runs scored, one walk, 11 total bases and a .579 on-base percentage. The Camp Hill, Pa., native began the weekend by going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored in the series opener on Friday. Law set a new career high with four hits by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Law finished the weekend by going 2-for-5 with a pair of base hits in the series finale on Sunday. He earned the first weekly league award of his career.
YSU leads the Horizon League and ranks 58th nationally with 10 home runs as a team through games played on Feb. 27. The Penguins also rank second in the league in total hits (64), runs scored (38), RBIs (35), total bases (105) and slugging percentage (.405). Youngstown State also ranks third in the Horizon League in doubles (11) and on-base percentage (.338). YSU's pitching staff leads the Horizon League with 60 strikeouts through the first two weeks of the 2023 season.
Perry leads the Horizon League with 14 strikeouts and 11 innings pitched while ranking sixth in the league with a .214 opponent batting average.
Senior Padraig O'Shaughnessy ranks in the top 10 in the Horizon League in batting average (.385), slugging percentage (.615), on-base percentage (.484), OPS (1.099), hits (10), RBIs (6), doubles (3) and walks (5).
Senior Steven D'Eusanio ranks in the top 10 in the Horizon League in hits (11), doubles (4), home runs (2), slugging percentage (.677) and OPS (1.052).
YSU was picked fourth in the 2023 Horizon League Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll. Wright State was tabbed as the preseason favorite while Oakland was picked second and Milwaukee was selected third. Northern Kentucky came in at fifth while Purdue Fort Wayne was slotted sixth. The Penguins were picked to finish third by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and fifth by D1Baseball.com.

Scouting The Bears

Baylor is 2-6 on the season after an 8-3 loss to UTSA on Tuesday night in Waco, Texas. The Bears have dropped four straight games entering the weekend series against YSU. Baylor has a 2-3 record at Baylor Ballpark so far this season. The Bears began a 14-game homestand with their contest on Tuesday night.
Freshman infielder Kolby Branch is batting .367 and slugging .567 while leading the Bears with 11 hits, three doubles, 10 RBIs, eight runs scored and six walks. Sophomore infielder Hunter Teplanszky is batting .333 with seven hits and three RBIs.
Sophomore right-hander Mason Marriott has an 0-1 record and a 6.23 ERA while leading Baylor with 13 strikeouts and 8.2 innings pitched over two starts. Marriott leads the Big 12 with 13.50 K/9. Junior left-hander/outfielder Cam Caley returns in 2023 after receiving Honorable Mention All-12 honors last season.
Baylor posted a 26-28 overall record and a 7-17 mark in Big 12 play in 2022. The Bears were picked ninth in 2023 Big 12 Preseason Poll. Baylor has 15 returners and 23 newcomers on its 2023 roster. The group of newcomers includes 10 true freshmen and 13 transfers.
The Bears are under the direction of first-year head coach Mitch Thompson, who previously served as the head coach at McLennan Community College in Waco for the past nine seasons. Thompson spent nearly two decades as an assistant at Baylor from 1995-2012.

at Memphis - Friday, Feb. 24 // W 6-2

Fifth-year senior right-hander Travis Perry allowed one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings to power YSU to a 6-2 victory over Memphis in the series opener on Friday at FedExPark in Memphis, Tenn.
While Perry was masterful over six innings on the mound, his offense backed him with six runs on 11 hits. Steven D'Eusanio went 3-for-4 while tying the single-game school record with three doubles. The fifth-year senior first baseman added a run scored, a walk and an RBI. D'Eusanio became the first Penguin to double three times in a game since his former teammate Blaze Glenn did so against St. Bonaventure on March 21, 2021.
Trey Law went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored while Ian Francis was 2-for-4 with a crucial three-run double. Andre Good went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored while Turner Grau singled, walked and scored a run.
Brandin Anderson was responsible for one run on one hit in two thirds of inning while Braden Gebhardt allowed one hit in one scoreless inning of relief. Patrick Gumto pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save of the season.

at Memphis - Saturday, Feb. 25 (G1) // L 9-13

Memphis used a pair of six-run innings to defeat Youngstown State 13-9 in seven innings in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader in Memphis, Tenn.
Trey Law went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored to pace the Penguins offensively. Law's four hits marked a new single-game career high, and he matched his career best with two RBIs. Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-4 with a double and his first home run of the season while Turner Grau was 3-for-5 with his first home run of 2023. YSU posted new season highs with nine runs and 15 hits as the Penguins outhit the Tigers 15-14.
YSU starter Nick Perez suffered the loss after allowing nine runs, five of them earned, on 10 hits and striking out four batters over four innings of work. Cam Marshalwitz was responsible for two runs on one hit without recording an out while Will Shaffer was charged with two runs on three hits over two innings.

at Memphis - Saturday, Feb. 25 (G2) // L 1-3

Memphis scored three runs over the first five innings on its way to a 3-1 victory over YSU in game two of Saturday's doubleheader in Memphis, Tenn.
Steven D'Eusanio hit his second home run of the season while Trey Law, Padraig O'Shaughnessy, Clay Wiesen and Eddie Saucedo also had hits for the Penguins.
YSU starter Brandon Mikos took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over a career-high six innings pitched. Casey Marshalwitz and Kenny Misik combined to toss two innings of scoreless relief.

at Memphis - Sunday, Feb. 26 // L 5-6

Memphis got a two-out RBI single from Tyler Heckert in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 6-5 victory over Youngstown State in the series finale on Sunday.
Andre Good went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run while Trey Law, Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Padraig O'Shaughnessy had two hits apiece for the Penguins offensively.
YSU starter Braden Gebhardt allowed one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts over a career-high three innings pitched in his first-career start. The freshman left-hander retired the side in order in the first inning. Brandin Anderson allowed an unearned run and struck out two batters in one inning of relief. Kenny Misik was responsible for two runs over a career-high 2.1 innings while Casey Marshalwitz was charged with one run in one inning of work. Patrick Gumto suffered the loss after surrendering one run on three hits with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings.
