Bowling Finishes Eighth at Mid-Winter Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team went 1-2 in bracket play on Sunday and finished in eighth place at the Mid-Winter Invitational.

The Penguins qualified seventh, and they dropped one spot with their two losses on Sunday for the final standings. Youngstown State finished the weekend with an 8-4 overall record.

"The ladies showed incredible resiliency and heart today," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "The way they stayed the course and stayed together throughout the day was quite impressive. When you can embrace challenges and adversity and turn them into a positive, that is a very good thing. We are looking forward to getting back to work this week and preparing for March."

Youngstown State, which is ranked No. 7 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, opened the day against No. 5 Stephen F. Austin and fell 4-2 in the best-of-seven Baker format. The Penguins dropped a two-pin decision in game three as anchor Madyson Marx was left with unlucky 7-10 split despite a shot in the pocket. That allowed the Ladyjacks to take a 2-1 lead in the match, and YSU had to play from behind the rest of the way.

Youngstown State bounced back to outlast No. 21 Lincoln Memorial for a 4-3 victory in which the Penguins shot at least 207 in all five games. With YSU down 2-0 in the match, Moore and Marx finished game three with four straight strikes to give the Penguins a slim 228-225 win. LMU won game four to take a 3-1 lead in the match, but Youngstown State bounced back by winning the final three games 216-205, 248-200 and 234-204.

In the final match deciding seventh and eighth place, YSU fell 4-2 to No. 8 Maryville. The Saints won a three-pin decision in game one, and they took the next two games to claim a 3-0 lead in the contest. The Penguins extended the match with wins of 199-183 and 228-185 in games four and five, but Maryville finished the tournament with a 203-176 win in game six.
