Penguins Go 3-1 to Start Mid-Winter Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team won three decisions and posted the sixth-highest pinfall over five Baker matches to start the Mid-Winter Invitational on Friday. The three-day tournament is being held at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
Youngstown State topped 1,000 in each of its first four matches, and its lowest set of the afternoon was a 989. The Penguins went with the same starting group of Lyndsay Ennis, Megan Grams, Madyson Marx, Kirsten Moore and Jade Cote in all five matches.
"We are elevating our togetherness and communication across the board and it's fueling our consistency," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "Our shotmaking was also outstanding today. It'll be important for us to fuel and rest tonight and come ready to play. We are hungry and looking forward to the weekend."
The Penguins shot 1,037 in an uncontested match to begin the tournament, and they followed that with consecutive wins over ranked opponents. YSU topped No. 20 UW-Whitewater 1,084-1,057 with a 245 game highlighting the set, and the Penguins' highest set of the day came in a 1,091-1,007 victory over No. 5 Stephen F. Austin.
Youngstown State's lone loss came in its fourth match, a 1,103-1,001 setback to eighth-ranked Maryville. YSU finished the day with a 989-802 win over Tusculum.
YSU will bowl in five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 10:25 a.m. Eastern.
