Struthers, Ohio – Youngstown State's bowling team battled through two seven-game matches on Sunday at Holiday Bowl and finished the 2026 Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic in fourth place.
Competing in their home center to start the 2026-27 season, the Penguins finished the day where it began. YSU was seeded fourth in the bracket after 10 matches of qualifying on Friday and Saturday, and its 1-2 record on Sunday kept it in fourth. That tied YSU's finish at the 2025 event.
"It's always an honor to host such a wonderful field at our home lanes," YSU head bowling coach Doug Kuberski said. "It was an exciting atmosphere, and our support really showed up strong for us."
"Overall, it was a solid start on the lanes. We checked a lot of boxes this weekend, competing well in some tough matches and gathering a lot of great information. We are looking forward to going over our notes and focusing on elevating as we prepare for Orlando."
The Penguins faced No. 2 Vanderbilt to begin the best-of-seven Baker format on Sunday, and the team bowling on lane 29 won each game. Vanderbilt won games one, three and five, and the Penguins took games two, four and six to force a game seven tiebreaker. With the Commodores having lane choice due to being the higher seed in the bracket, they elected to move back to lane 29 and won game seven 215-193.
Youngstown State then fell behind 2-0 to Wright State before rallying in the second half of the match. The Raiders threw the front six of game three, but back-to-back opens in the seventh and eighth frames opened the door for the Penguins, who were clean through five frames and had a string of three strikes leading into Elizabeth Teuber's double in the 10th to win the game 236-221.YSU evened the match with a 199-188 win in the fourth, and Wright State answered with a 200-157 win in the fifth game. Another five-bagger helped YSU win game six 226-186, and the Penguins threw the front six and 11 strikes overall to win 266-167 in game seven.
The Penguins couldn't match that high scoring against Nebraska, who won the battle for third place 4-0. The Huskers averaged 223.0 per game in the match.
Jacksonville State won the team title, winning all three of its best-of-seven matches in four games on Sunday. Vanderbilt finished second, Nebraska was third, and Youngstown State was fourth.
YSU's next tournament will be the Destination Orlando event at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Fla. The three-day event will be held Oct. 30 through Nov. 1.
