Norfolk, Va. – The Youngstown State softball team opened the 2023 campaign by splitting a doubleheader at Norfolk State on Monday afternoon. The Penguins dropped the opener, 9-4, and won game two, 6-4.
In the game two victory, junior Sara Fessler went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Senior Megan Turner also had two hits while senior Conchetta Rinaldi drove in two runs.
Junior Devan Ryan picked up her first win with a complete-game effort and six strikeouts.
In the opener, the Penguins cranked out 13 hits but left eight runners left on base. Seniors Conchetta Rinaldi and Avrey Schumacher each had three hits while Fessler and Hailey Roach each had two hits.
The Penguins and Spartans conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader, Tuesday, at Noon.
