The Youngstown State bowling team wrapped up an impressive fall schedule by finishing second at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic on Sunday at Bowl America Woodbridge in Woodbridge, Va.
The runner-up finish gives the Penguins three top-two finishes out of four tournaments in the semester. Youngstown State won the Destination Orlando: Sunshine State Classic at the end of October, and it had second-place finishes at the Penguin Classic and the Hawk Classic.
"It sure was a fun weekend, and I'm very proud of our work all around," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "The ladies did an outstanding job maintaining solid focus on our process and on making quality shots, and the spare shooting was rock solid. We're looking forward to spending some time with family this week before getting back after it and finishing the semester strong in practice and in the classroom."
Youngstown State was in second place after each of the first two days of the Hawk Classic after a record-breaking Friday and another solid day on Saturday. The Penguins beat Monmouth 1,033-923 in a traditional match to end qualifying and lock up the second seed.
YSU was pitted against Vanderbilt in the 2 vs. 3 match to start the best-of-seven Baker format, and Youngstown State topped the Commodores 4-3. YSU trailed 2-1, but it took game four 212-205 and fired a 299 in game five to take a 3-2 lead in the match. The only thing that kept the Penguins from their second perfect game of the weekend was a 10-pin on the 12th attempt.
Vanderbilt won game six 269-268 to even the match, and Youngstown State left no doubt with a 277-216 win in game seven when it threw the front seven.
Youngstown State had a 227 in game one and a 237 in game three against the Gamecocks to take a 2-1 lead in the title match, but Jax State won the next three games to claim the title.
The Penguins' next tournament will be the Northeast Classic on Jan. 19, 2024.
