
YSU Baseball Announces Six Signees for Fall 2024

Six baseball student-athletes have each signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and baseball futures at Youngstown State University in the fall of 2024, Head Coach Dan Bertolini announced on Monday.
The signing class includes Caleb Hadley (Southington, Ohio), Aidan Haynes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), Tyler Heflin (West Chester, Ohio), Will Nash (Columbus, Ohio), Hayden Scarmack (Sharon, Pa.) and Jay Wrona (New Castle, Pa.).
Bertolini on Signing Class: "We are extremely excited to welcome these players and their families to our YSU Baseball program. Each year, our coaches do a great job identifying and recruiting high-quality athletes and even more importantly, high-quality people, to bring into our Penguin Baseball family. We look forward to having the opportunity to coach these young men next season and have them add to our culture here at Youngstown State."

Caleb Hadley | C | 6'2 | 215 | Southington, Ohio | Warren JFK High School
Highlights: Three-time first-team all-conference selection under Coach Jim Ciambotti at Warren JFK High School… Earned Ohio Division IV First-Team All-State honors in 2023… Helped lead the Eagles to the Ohio Division IV Regional Finals as the starting catcher in 2023… Batted .443 with 31 hits, six doubles, three triples, one home run and 21 RBIs over 27 games played as a junior in 2023… Batted .382 with 21 hits, four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 28 RBIs over 20 games played as a sophomore in 2022… Member of Warren JFK's first state championship team as a freshman in 2021… Also a standout quarterback for the football team at JFK… Helped lead the football team to 13 wins and an appearance in the Ohio Division VII State Championship game as a junior in 2022… Finished the 2022 football season with 1,347 passing yards, 882 rushing yards and 27 total touchdowns… Named to the WKBN Big 22 Class of 2022… Played summer/travel ball for Team Ohio Pro Select under coaches Chris Check, Joe Gunn and Brian Chad… Member of National Honor Society.
Personal: Parents are Mark and Sarah… Has a brother (Isaac) and a sister (Grace)… Intends to study finance at YSU.
Aidan Haynes | RHP | 6'1 | 190 | North Tonawanda, N.Y. | North Tonawanda High School
Highlights: Standout pitcher at North Tonawanda High School under Coach Eric Partell… On track to become a four-year varsity starter and letterwinner… Named Second-Team All-Niagara Frontier League as a junior in 2023… Recorded a 3.12 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 12 walks in 33.2 innings pitched over eight appearances as sophomore in 2022… Registered a 3.07 ERA, 26 strikeouts and seven walks in 13.2 innings pitched over four appearances as a junior in 2023… Played summer/travel ball for Ohio Elite Baseball under coaches Mike Byrne and Shawn Alazaus… Posted a 1.27 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP over 45.2 innings pitched during the summer of 2023… Also registered 52 strikeouts to only seven walks while limiting opponents to a .188 batting average… Finished with a 5-2 record, three complete games and a pair of one-hit performances… Also played travel ball for Thunderwolves Baseball.
Personal: Parents are Rodney and Heather… Has two brothers (Gavin and Owen).
Tyler Heflin | RHP | 6'0 | 180 | West Chester, Ohio | Archbishop Moeller High School
Highlights: Plays for Coach Tim Held at Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio… Helped Moeller to a historic 2023 season which saw the Crusaders capture their ninth state title and finish the season ranked as the No. 5 team in the country… Helped Moeller finish the 2023 season with a 31-3 overall record and a 17-0 mark on its home field… The Crusaders won their final 17 games of the season and defeated Olentangy Orange 4-1 in the 2023 OHSAA Division I State Final… Played summer ball for Ohio Supreme under Coach Tom Aspero.
Personal: Parents are Scott and Jodie… Has four siblings (Zack, Jake, Lucas and AJ)… Plans to study business management at YSU.
Will Nash | IF | 6'2 | 180 | Columbus, Ohio | St. Charles Preparatory School
Highlights: Three-year varsity letter winner for Coach Ray Benjamin at St. Charles Preparatory School in Columbus, Ohio… Two-time team captain on the baseball team… Batted .327 with 17 hits and 12 runs scored as a junior in 2023… Played summer/travel ball for Bo Jackson Elite Silver 17U… Also played varsity basketball for the Cardinals during his sophomore year.
Personal: Parents are Jason and Jennifer… Has a brother (Alex) and a sister (Lauren)… Plans to study finance at YSU.
Hayden Scarmack | IF | 6'1 | 180 | Sharon, Pa. | Sharon High School
Highlights: First-Team All-Region selection under Coach Chris Buchman at Sharon High School… Named a 2023 Erie Times-News First-Team Region 2 All-Star… Batted .400 and slugged .716 with 24 hits, seven doubles, three triples, two home runs and 16 RBIs over 17 games played as a junior in 2023… Also recorded nine walks, 24 runs scored, a .507 on-base percentage and eight stolen bases… Played summer/travel ball for Ohio Avalanche under Coach Shawn Boyer.

Jay Wrona | IF | 5'10 | 165 | New Castle, Pa. | Mohawk High School
Highlights: Four-sport standout in baseball, basketball, football and golf at Mohawk High School… Three-time nominee for the Lawrence County Athlete of the Year Award… Three-time first-team all-conference performer in baseball under Coach Nick Maiorano… Has amassed 79 career hits while recording a career batting average of .444… Played summer ball for the Astro Falcons in the Youngstown Class B League… Three-time first-team all-conference selection in basketball… Surpassed 1,000 career points during his junior season on the hardwood… Four-time first-team all-conference pick as a quarterback on the football field… Passed for over 2,000 yards and 36 touchdowns as a senior in 2023… Two-time first-team all-conference honoree in golf… Qualified for the 2022 PIAA Class 2A individual golf championship.
