The Youngstown State bowling team won four head-to-head matches and averaged 204 across 25 Baker games to open the Northeast Classic on Friday at Bowlero Deptford. The three-day tournament is being hosted by Sacred Heart in Deptford, N.J.
The Penguins began the day with three straight sets in the 1,070s, and they finished the day with a five-match total of 5,099. It was YSU's first day of competition in two months as the team paused between the fall and spring semesters.
Youngstown State broke 200 in 11 of its first 15 games but just once over the final 10 as the scoring pace dropped. Still, the Penguins' collective effort on Friday has them in third place among the 33-team field.
"The ladies did a heck of a job today across the board," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "Our shotmaking and spare shooting were solid, and we maintained our energy and communication levels throughout the day. We also gathered some great notes from the last two matches and are excited to put those into play for tomorrow. We are off to a solid start and are hungry heading into the weekend."
The Penguins began the day with a 1,077-760 victory over Kutztown, and their third game against the Bears was their highest of the day at 248. YSU broke 200 in six straight games between the win over Kutztown and its 1,070-896 victory over LIU, and the Penguins topped No. 25 Merrimack 1,074-909. Youngstown State followed that with a 968-760 win over Wagner to improve to 4-0 on the day, and the Penguins dropped their final match 938-910 to No. 15 Mount St. Mary's. YSU trailed by 10 pins going into the fifth game, and four splits in the game ruined the bid for an unbeaten day.
Vanderbilt leads the field with an impressive total of 5,333 pins, which was 191 more than second-place McKendree. Youngstown State is third with 5,099, and Stephen F. Austin (5,081), Nebraska (5,031) and Arkansas State (5,018) were the other teams to break 5,000 on the day.
Youngstown State will bowl five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 9:25 a.m. YSU will take on Monmouth, No. 13 Delaware State, No. 14 Fairleigh Dickinson, Bryant and No. 10 Maryland Eastern Shore.
