The Youngstown State women's soccer team took an early lead, but dropped a physical game to Duquesne, 2-1, on Thursday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins fall to 0-3 on the year while Duquesne improves to 2-1 on the season.
Senior
Maddie Root put the Penguins up 1-0 with her first goal of the season at the 8:42 mark of the game. Root was fed by junior
Abby Knight, cleared a defender and launched a shot from 28 yards out over the outstretched arms of the Dukes' goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net.
Duquesne knotted the game on a goal from Jaimi Araujo at the 21:08 mark the game and the teams entered the lockerroom tied, 1-1, at the intermission.
Duquesne's Mackenzie Muir scored the eventual game-winner at the 50:44 mark to put the Dukes up 2-1.
The Penguins did not let up pounding eight second-half shots with five on target but were not able to finish. Freshman
Taylor Berry led the Penguins with five shots, including four on goal.
The teams tied in the shot column, 13-13, but the Penguins posted more shots on goal, 9-8.
Junior
Brooklynn Kirkpatrick posted six saves in the loss.
The Penguins visit Loyola (Md.), Sunday, Aug. 28, in Baltimore, Md.
