Payne Named Academic All-Horizon League, Saibene Earns Honorable Mention Laurels

Indianapolis, Ind. – Youngstown State sophomore Sydney Payne was named to the 2022 Horizon League Softball All-Academic Team, the league announced.
Senior Nikki Saibene was named Academic All-Horizon League Honorable Mention.
Payne, a sophomore carries a 3.85 grade-point average in accounting, has played in 35 games this season and has scored 12 runs this season.
Saibene, who carries a 3.39 overall GPA in marketing management, is batting .275 this is season and has seven doubles, two home runs and 21 runs batted in. She was named First-Team All-Horizon League, First-Team NFCA All-Region and Horizon League All-Tournament Team in 2021. A 2022 Senior Class Award Top 30 Finalist in 2022, she has been named to the Horizon League Honor Roll six times
Payne and Saibene are the first YSU players named to the All-Academic Team since 2019.
The All-Academic Team and Honorable Mention Team are comprised of student-athletes from all 10 League institutions that sponsor softball. Oakland and Purdue Fort Wayne led the League with three selections each while Cleveland State, Green Bay, IUPUI and Youngstown State all placed two total student-athletes on the teams. Detroit Mercy, Northern Kentucky, RMU and UIC all had one student-athlete named to the All-Academic Team.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team's overall contests or 20 percent of overall contests for pitchers. An Honorable Mention is awarded to student-athletes who received at least 25 percent of votes, but did not make the All-Academic team.
