Youngstown State freshman bowler Jade Cote has been added to the Team Canada Adult Women's Bowling squad for 2022, the Canadian Tenpin Federation announced on Monday.
Cote, who was previously on Junior Team Canada in 2020 and was selected to compete in the 2020 World Youth Championships, is on the adult unit for the first time. She joined the women's team along with Valerie Bercier, Marie-Eve Robertson and Karine Bouchard, and the native of Farnham, Quebec, now has the opportunity to represent Canada in international competition.
According to the CTF's post on its Facebook page, Jade and her fellow bowlers "all bring high recognized team values and international, and collegiate experience that will strengthen the core of the program."
Cote was unable able to participate in the Team Canada trials due to Youngstown State competing at the NCAA Regional in Lansing in April, but she applied for a position and was awarded a spot based on her credentials.
Cote set three school records in her first collegiate season at Youngstown State and was named to the NTCA First-Team All-Rookie Team and the Southland Bowling League All-Rookie Team. Most impressively, she averaged 205.13 in traditional games, which was more than five pins higher than the record heading into the season. Cote also set the school mark for single-season strike percentage by striking on 51.92 percent of her attempts, and her 225.60 average at the Big Red Invitational in February was the highest average ever by a Penguin at a tournament.
Cote finished in the top 11 at four tournaments and was among the Penguins' top three finishers six times. Heading into the NCAA Regionals, Cote ranked second among Southland freshmen in scoring average at 20.30 pins per frame and led all conference freshmen in strike percentage.
Cote is the second Youngstown State freshman to join a national team in 2022. Lyndsay Ennis earned a position on the 2022 Junior Team USA based on her performance at the 2021 Junior Gold Championships.
