YSU Student-Athletes Maintain High Level of Academic Success

Following the 2022 spring semester, Youngstown State's 466 student-athletes own an outstanding 3.481 cumulative grade-point average, the Athletics Department announced on Tuesday.

YSU had another banner semester in the classroom this past spring. Overall, 347 had a semester GPA above 3.00 (74 percent) and in total, 368 have a cumulative grade-point average above 3.00 (79 percent).

In the spring, 92 student-athletes (20 percent) posted a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. Nearly half of those student-athletes (38) own a cumulative GPA of 4.00 upon the conclusion of the spring semester.

Following the spring semester, all YSU programs own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.13. The Women's Bowling program leads the way with a 3.84 GPA.

All 19 of YSU's sports have a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or higher. Of note, 17 of YSU's 19 programs have a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher.

In the spring, 11 programs boasted a GPA of 3.35 or above. The women's bowling team, which advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive season, posted the best semester GPA at 3.726. Women's tennis, which won the Horizon League Tournament title and also advanced to the NCAAs, ranked second at 3.65. Every student-athlete on those programs recorded a 3.00 GPA or above this spring.

Men's tennis owns the highest cumulative GPA of the men's programs at 3.684. Men's golf is second at 3.481 while Swimming and Diving is third at 3.471.  Men's tennis notched the best spring-only semester GPA at 3.48. The Penguins won their first-ever Horizon League regular-season title and reached the NCAAs for the first time in school history.

Women's sports who had 3.5 GPAs or above in the spring included bowling, tennis, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, swimming and diving and soccer.

The 94-member football program owns a cumulative 3.17 GPA following the semester.  The football team had 66 student-athletes earn a GPA of 3.00 or better in the spring while seven members of the squad had a 4.00 GPA.
