
Penguins Pick Up Doubleheader Sweep Over Niagara

Senior Yazmine Romero went 5-for-8 on the day while freshman Bree Kohler went a combined 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a win to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Niagara, 5-4, in eight innings and 9-2 on Tuesday at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins improve to 19-14 overall while the Purple Eagles fall to 8-11.
In the opener, junior Avrey Schumache'sr two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Penguins the 5-4 victory. Conchetta Rinaldi singled to lead off the inning, and pinch-runner Sydney Payne advanced to third on Taylor Truran's sacrifice bunt. On the next pitch, Schumacher, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, smacked a single through the right side of the infield to score Payne with the game-winning run.
The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Schumacher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Purple Eagles tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Penguins used a three-run fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Senior Nikki Saibene was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Schumacher singled to put runners at first and second. Kohler ripped a triple to right-center field to plate pinch-runner Cassandra Carlson and Schumacher to put YSU up, 3-1. After Alex DeLeon was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, Kohler scored when DeLeon was caught in a run-down to give the Penguins a three-run lead.
Niagara scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Senior Kayla Rutherford picked up her first win of the season firing a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Romero went 4-for-4 with three runs scored while junior Megan Turner drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, and Rinaldi also hit a three-run home run to pace the Penguins in the 9-2 victory.
Kohler pitched six innings and allowed just three hits and struck out five for her third win of the season.
The Purple Eagles scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Alicia Nash. YSU answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Kohler was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off the inning and advance to third on Romero's single. After Romero stole second, Turner's sacrifice fly to center field scored Kohler and Romero tied the game on Truran's double down the left-field line.
The Penguins scored three times in the bottom of the on Rinaldi's three-run home run to left field, and added four more in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single by Romero and a three-run home run by Turner.
Youngstown State returns to Horizon League action with a three-game series at Cleveland State, April 8-9, in Cleveland, Ohio. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
