Cleveland, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's tennis team beat Cleveland State 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. YSU claimed the outright Horizon League title with the victory.
YSU finished the regular season with a 13-8 overall record and 8-0 Horizon League record. Cleveland State finished the year 12-11 and 6-2.
The Penguins took an early lead by winning the doubles point. YSU had wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the 1-0 lead.
In singles play, YSU won matches at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
At No. 1, Laurentiu Mandocescu picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Maxime Mareschal-Hay. At No. 3, Clement Mainguy won 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 over Kade Mindry. At No. 4, Nathan Favier beat JuandeDios Abboud by a score of 6-4, 6-2. At No. 6, Will Everett stepped in the lineup to beat Austin Staiger by a score of 6-0, 6-4.
YSU will be the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League Championships which start on Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Penguins have earned a bye to the semifinals and will first take part in the tournament on Saturday morning.
