Buffenbarger, Turner Lead Softball to Split at Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio – Senior Elle Buffenbarger picked up her league-leading 15th victory and junior Megan Turner went 2-for-4 with a home and three runs batted in as the Youngstown State softball team defeated Cleveland State, 3-2, in game two of a doubleheader at Viking Field.
The Penguins dropped the opener, 2-1, but improved to 23-20 overall and 8-7 in Horizon League play. Cleveland State moves to 15-18 overall and 11-4 in the league.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after a two-out single through the right side.
In the top of the third, Yazmine Romero walked with two outs and Turner sent her seventh home run of the season over the right-field fence to give the Penguins a 2-1 advantage.
Turner's single to center field in the top of the fifth plated Romero from first base and extended the Penguins lead to 3-1.
The Vikings tacked on a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 3-2 after five complete.
Buffenbarger, who had four strikeouts, shut down the Vikings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings for the win.
In the opener, Hailey Niederkohr recorded two of the Penguins four hits to lead YSU offensively.
Romero drove in the Penguins' lone run with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth inning. That inning, the Penguins had the bases-loaded and no outs, but could only plate one run.'
The Vikings tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Sophie Howell was the hard-luck loser allowing just three hits in six innings pitched.
Youngstown State hosts Green Bay in a three-game series, April 22-23, at the Covelli Sports Complex. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
