Buffenbarger's Gem Leads Softball to Split Against IUPUI

Senior Elle Buffenbarger fired a complete-game two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 2-1 win over IUPUI in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Covelli Sports Complex. The Penguins dropped game two, 7-2.

Youngstown State improves to 17-13 overall and 6-2 in Horizon League play while the Jaguars improve to 6-24 overall and 4-4 in league play.

Buffenbarger picked up her 13th win of the season, her eighth complete game and her fourth double-digit strikeout performance.

The Penguins, whose only hit in game one was a single by Conchetta Rinaldi, scored twice in the fourth inning. After a Rinaldi flyout to right, walks to Taylor Truran, Avrey Schumacher and Hailey Niederkohr loaded the bases. Senior Nikki Saibene became the fourth straight base-on-balls to plate pinch-runner Cassandra Carlson, and Alex DeLeon was hit by a pitch to drive in Schumacher.

IUPUI's Jordan Barnes hit a solo home run the top of the seventh for the Jaguars' only run.

In the nightcap, Saibene and Yazmine Romero each had two hits while Truran and Saibene each drove in runs.

Truran tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to scored Romero and Saibene hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning.

IUPUI scored two runs in each of the top of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Youngstown State and IUPUI close out the series with a single game, Sunday, April 3. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
