Romero Breaks All-Time Hits Record as Softball Splits Against Norse

Senior Yazmine Romero became Youngstown State's all-time hits leader with a single to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one of a doubleheader split against Northern Kentucky on Friday afternoon.
Romero, who now has 235 hits, broke the record of 233 set by Haley Thomas from 2009-12 and has at least one hit in the last six games.
The Penguins, who dropped game one, 5-1, and won game two, 2-1, improve to 22-18 overall and 7-5 in the Horizon League while the Norse improve to 17-24 overall and 6-11 in the league.
Sophomore Sophie Howell fired a complete-game six-hitter and struck out six to lift the Penguins to a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Youngstown State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning by using the small ball. Freshman Bree Kohler led off the inning with a double to right center, advanced to third on Hailey Niederkohr's bunt single and scored on a Norse throwing error.
After a sacrifice bunt by Alex DeLeon, Romero's bunt single plated Niederkohr with the Penguins' second run.
The Norse scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, but the Howell retired four the the last five batters she face to collect her fourth win of the season.
In the opener, the Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Nikki Saibene's single through the left side the scored Megan Turner, who doubled.
The Norse scored twice in the third, twice in fifth and once more in the sixth to take game one, 5-1.
The Penguins and Norse conclude the series with a single game on Saturday, April 16, at 1 p.m.
