The First Pitch
• The Youngstown State softball team (19-15) returns to action with a pair of non-league, midweek doubleheaders against Niagara (9-14) on April 12 and St. Bonaventure (7-25) on April 13.
• First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on both days.

• Senior Yazmine Romero went 5-for-8 on the day while freshman Bree Kohler went a combined 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a win to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Niagara, 5-4, in eight innings and 9-2 on April 5 at the YSU Softball Field.
• In the opener, junior Avrey Schumache'sr two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Penguins the 5-4 victory. Conchetta Rinaldi singled to lead off the inning, and pinch-runner Sydney Payne advanced to third on Taylor Truran's sacrifice bunt. On the next pitch, Schumacher, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, smacked a single through the right side of the infield to score Payne with the game-winning run.
• Senior Kayla Rutherford picked up her first win of the season firing a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
• In the nightcap, Romero went 4-for-4 with three runs scored while junior Megan Turner drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, and Rinaldi also hit a three-run home run to pace the Penguins in the 9-2 victory.
• Kohler pitched six innings and allowed just three hits and struck out five for her third win of the season.

• The Penguins split a doubleheader against the Bonnies on March 22 at the YSU Softball Field.

• Youngstown State lost the first game, 5-4, and won game two, 3-2, in eight innings.
• Sophomore Hailey Niederkohr's two-out, bases-loaded single on a full count in the bottom of eighth inning lifted the Penguins to the 3-2 victory.
• Senior Sarah Bader was place on second to start the bottom half of the eighth as part of the international tiebreaker. Following a Conchetta Rinaldi sacrifice bunt that advanced Bader to third, intentional walks to freshman Taylor Truran and senior Nikki Saibene loaded the bases.
• After a fielder's choice cut Bader down at the plate, Niederkohr, who had two hits, laced a 3-2 pitch up the middle to plate Truran with the game-winning run.

• Youngstown State hosts Northern Kentucky, April 15-16, at the YSU Softball Field.
• First pitch for Friday's single game is set for 3 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader has a 12 p.m. start. Saturday is also Senior Day.
Rinaldi League Leader
• Junior Conchetta Rinaldi is having a career-best season.
• She leads teh Horizon League with 26 RBIs while posting a .314 batting average with six doubles and five home runs.
Buffenbarger Collects 600 Strikeouts
• Fifth-year senior Elle Buffenbarger became Youngstown State's all-time strikeout leader when she broke the record of 565 set by Casey Crozier from 2011-14.
• Buffenbarger now has 656 career strikeouts and became the first player in YSU history and just the seventh player in Horizon League history to record at least 600 career whiffs.
• She needs 44 more to become the fifth player in league history with 700 career strikeouts.
• Buffenbarger needs just five more wins to tie and six to break the YSU all-time wins record.
Saibene Approaching RBI Record
• Senior Nikki Saibene is nearing the YSU all-time RBI record of 130 set by Sarah Dowd from 2014-17.
• Saibene now ranks third with 127 runs batted in and needs four more to break the record.
• This year, 14 of her 18 runs batted in have come with two outs.
• She also ranks fourth all-time with 27 career home runs.
• Last season, Saibene tied the single-season mark of 49 set by Miranda Castiglione in 2016.
Romero Nets 200, Chasing All-Time Hits Mark
• Senior Yazmine Romero became the sixth player in school history to collect at least 200 career hits.
• She ranks fourth with 224 hits and needs four more to move into a tie for third place on the list.
• Romero also needs 10 more to break the record of 233 set by Haley Thomas from 2009-12.
• She is the fifth player in school history to record at least 200 hits and 100 runs scored. She has scored 107 runs in her career.
• Romero set the YSU freshman hits record with 66 in 2018.
Campbell Approaching Career Win 600
• With the Penguins' 2-1 over Hampton on Feb. 25, Head Coach Brian Campbell picked up his 300th win at Youngstown State and now has 312 with the Penguins.
• Campbell is the school's all-time wins leader and he also needs just one more wins this season to reach 600 for his career.
• He owns a career record of 599-475-2 and a 314-346-1 mark at YSU.
• Over the last five full seasons (2016-19, 2021), the Penguins have averaged 29.4 wins per season.
• Campbell has also been named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2021.
• During his time, he has coached 34 All-Horizon League picks, four freshmen/newcomers of the year, two pitchers of the year, two players of the year, and seven National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region selections.
