Penguins Fight But Fall to South Carolina, 12-7

Columbia, S.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team turned in a gutsy performance but fell to SEC member South Carolina, 12-7, on Tuesday afternoon at the Carolina Softball Stadium.
The Penguins fall to 9-9 overall while South Carolina improves to 14-6.
Junior Megan Turner led the Penguins offensively going 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and a two-run home run, while freshman Taylor Truran also went 2-for-2 and scored a run.
Senior Elle Buffenbarger became the first YSU pitcher and just the seventh in Horizon League history to record 600 career strikeouts and now have 602 for her career after fanning four.
After allowing a run in the bottom of the first, the Penguins used a thre-run second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Bree Kolher led off the frame with a single up the middle and advanced to third after a pair of groud outs. Turner deposited a 2-2 pitch over the center-field fence, her second home run of the season, to put the Penguins up 2-1. Consecutive singles by Truran and Avrey Schumacher continued the inning and a single down the right-field line by pinch-hitter Milena Lacatena gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead.
The Gamecocks regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third to go up, 5-3.
Youngstown State responded a four-run frame in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. Turner and Truran each singled to lead off the inning and pinch-runners Elyssa Imler and Hailey Roach each advanced on a wild pitch. Imler scored when Avrey Schumacher reached on an error and Roach scored and tied the game on Yazmine Romero's infield single.
Schumacher and Romero each scored on wild pitches to take a 7-5 lead.
South Carolina scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game and used a five-run fifth to put the game out of reach.
Youngstown State opens Horizon League play with a three-game series against Detroit Mercy, March 11-12, at the YSU Softball Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
