Penguins Pick Up Doubleheader Sweep Against Detroit

Junior Conchetta Rinaldi went 5-for-7 on the day and helped the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Detroit Mercy on Thursday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.
Youngstown State won, 8-6, in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap.
The Penguins improve to 11-9 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League while the Titans fall to 0-11 overall and 0-2 in the league.
In game one, Rinaldi went 3-for-4 with a run batted in while Megan Turner belted a three-run home run and Avrey Schumacher drove in three runs.
Elle Buffenbarger struck out five and picked up her eighth win of the year while Kayla Rutherford earned her first save of the season.
In the bottom of the second, Nikki Saibene was hit by a pitch, Hailey Niederkohr recorded an infield single and Turner reached on an error to load the base. Schumacher's bases-clearing double to left-center field put the Penguins up, 3-0.
The next inning, the Penguins capitalized on another Titans error that led to Turner's three-run home run to left field that extended the lead to 6-0.
The Titans battled back and used a five run fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Penguins answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to boost their lead to three, 8-5. Rinaldi's double to right-center field scored Alex DeLeon from first and Saibene's single plated Rinaldi.
Detroit Mercy added another run in the top of the fifth.
Rutherford pitched the final two innings of the game for the save.
In the nightcap, Bree Kohler fired a complete game with four strikeouts to pick up her second win of the season.
Rinaldi went 2-for-3 while Schumacher had two hits and run batted in. Freshman Taylor Truran had a two-run double to lead the Penguins offensively.
Youngstown State and Detroit Mercy conclude the three-game series, Friday, at 11 a.m.
