Buffenbarger, Bats Lead Penguins to Split at UIC

Chicago, Ill. -- Senior Elle Buffenbarger threw her first shutout of the season and the Penguins banged out 13 hits in an 8-0 win over UIC in game one of a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon. The Penguins dropped game two, 5-4.
Youngstown State improves to 14-11 overall and 4-1 in the Horizon League while UIC moves to 4-15 overall and 1-3 in the league.
In the opener, senior Grace Cea went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in while freshman Taylor Truran also had three hits. Juniors Megan Turner and Avrey Schumacher and sophomore Hailey Niederkohr each had two hits. Turner also belted a solo home run.
Buffenbarger (10-3) picked up her 10th win of the season firing a five-hit, complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts.
The Penguins jumped out in front early with a run in the top of the second inning. Schumacher doubled to left-center and scored on a throwing error that allowed Niederkohr reach second base.
In the top of the third, Turner lined a two-out solo home over the right-center field fence to put the Penguins up 2-0.
The Penguins scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
In the nightcap, the Flames jumped out to a 4-0 lead after plating a run in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the third innning.
The Penguins knotted the game at 4-4 with a four-run fourth inning. Senior Nikki Saibene began the rally with a two-out walk and Schumacher singled to left-center and advanced to second on the throw to third. Niederkohr singled to plate Saibene and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Bree Kohler's two-run single to left field go the Penguins within one, 4-3, and Cea's run-scoring single to left field tied the game at 4-4.
The Flames scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Penguins and Flames close out the series with a single game on Monday, March 21. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. EDT.
