Softball Hangs On For Series-Clinching Win at UIC, 7-5

Chicago, Ill. -- Junior Conchetta Rinaldi went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a series-clinching 7-5 win over UIC on Monday afternoon at Flames Field.
With the win the Penguins improve to 15-11 overalland 5-1 in Horizon League play while the Flames fall to 4-16 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Junior Megan Turner went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in while senior Yazmine Romero drove in a pair of runs.
Senior Elle Buffenbarger picked up her 11th win of the season tossing a complete-game victory with three strikeouts.
The Penguins used a pair of big innings to score all seventh of their runs. Youngstown State scored four times in the second and three more in the fifth.
In the second, Romero began the scoring with a two-run single up the middle to score Hailey Niederkohr and Alex DeLeon, who both singled singled. Turner followed with a two-run double to left-center field to plate Grace Cea, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Romero.
The Flames scored a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth to get within one, 4-3.
Youngstown State answered with a three-run fifth to take a 7-3 lead. Turner led off the frame with a single to center and Rinaldi delivered a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for her third homer of the season to put the Penguins up 6-3. On the next pitch Taylor Truran belted her second home run of the season to extend the Penguins lead to four runs.
UIC got back within two, 7-5, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, and had two on and the game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Buffenbarger, however, induced a game-ending ground out to seal the victory.
Youngstown State hosts St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader, Tuesday, March 22, at 3 p.m.
