Penguins Go 4-1 to Start Columbia 300 Music City Classic

The Youngstown State bowling team won its first four matches and finished the opening round of the Columbia 300 Music City Classic in 14th place in the standings. The tournament is being hosted by Vanderbilt at the Smyrna Bowling Center.

The Penguins topped 1,070 in two of their sets and recorded a 980, but they were also under 900 twice in the five Baker matches. Youngstown State was seventh in the standings after four matches but slid to 14th after an 820 set in its final match.

"It was a solid day overall. Our energy and focus were positive and consistent throughout the day," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We made some mistakes as a unit the last match, but we also gathered a lot of solid info we'll take to tomorrow. With continued positivity and more discipline, we can definitely go on a run this weekend."

YSU started the day with a 980-886 victory over Alabama State, and it picked up back-to-back wins over top-20 teams in its next two matches. The Penguins topped No. 18 UW-Whitewater 892-869 on a challenging pair of lanes, and they followed with their highest set of the day in a 1,086-1,001 victory against No. 12 Maryville. A 256 game highlighted YSU's 1,074-778 win over Aurora as the Penguins improved to 4-0, and a 1,002-820 loss to No. 15 Tulane ended the day.

McKendree leads the field with a five-match total of 5,300, which was 129 pins more than second-place Stephen F. Austin. The second through sixth-place teams in the standings are all from the Southland Bowling League as SFA is followed by Vanderbilt, Arkansas State, Sam Houston State and Louisiana Tech.

Youngstown State will compete in five traditional matches on Saturday as it tries to move up the standings. Friday's total pinfall will be added to Saturday's to determine seeding for Sunday's bracket.
